The support software could be try to connect to Dell to check for updates to your O/S and drivers.

I've not found a use for it up to now - after nearly a year. I think I will uninstall it. It is sort of a nuisance.

You will find that if you uninstall Dell Support in Add/Remove Programs the problem will disappear (and it is highly doubtful that you will miss the presence of the program).
