Share folder button gray - can't use it

When I go to a drive properties and select the "Sharing" tab the "Share" button is grayed out and cannot be used. See this image:-

This means that I cannot remove a drive from sharing or add another to sharing.

How can I remedy this problem?

Individual folders within a drive do not give this problem.

I am using Windows Vista Home Premium

Thanks for any info,

I think this is by design, Vista will not let you share the entire C drive, this would not be a good thing to do security wise.

G'Day mombodog - thanks for reply

Well it used to work OK - when I first set up a home network between my two computers they could both see each other's drives and share them.

But now my old XP machine cannot see my Vista machine and I was wondering if the grayed out button was a symptom of the reason.

The image I referred to in my first post shows that the C:\ drive is, in fact, shared but the share button is grayed out.

So I cannot work out what has gone wrong.

Check windows firewall on the Vista PC, be sure file and print sharing did not get blocked.

Also go to the Network and Sharing Center, see if sharing is enabled/configured there also.

There is another place to check also
Control Panel/Networking and Internet/File and Printer sharing

Networking is a pain in Vista.

Did you install any security software lately?

Thanks for replying again.

Windows firewall is off and I have tried with other firewalls turned off on both machines so it is not a firewall problem.

I will check out the links you sent me and see what I can find there.
