It appears that you have an HP piece of hardware (printer, scanner, camera)? From the link below, it appears that hpcmpmgr.exe is phoning home (to HP servers) looking for updates for your hardware. The link provides a download for removal of this hideous .exe file to prevent your problem from occurring. Leave it to HP to come up with something like this !
I have tried to download the files hpcmpmgr-disable.exe to get rid of HP's Component Manager on my computer but for some reason the HP site doesn't download the files, it just doesn't do anything, do you have any idea if I am doing something wrong and maybe HP has a problem? Thanks for the help so far, at least I know what my problem is and if I can only get these files to download. Thanks, Margene
I am having the same problem with my computer. As I type this I am on the phone with HP support. So far the guy has no idea what the executable does. I have not tried as of yet to download the disable exe. I will keep you posted.
My problem is solved, I just received an email from HP support and I tried it and it worked!
To resolve the problem, disable hpcmpmgr.exe running in the system, Press CTRL+ ALT+ DEL to bring up the task manager. Under processes select the hypcmpmgr.exe and click end task. Yuou should be able to shut down the system.
You can also prevent the hpcmpmgr.exe file from loading by disabling it in MSConfig. Follow the steps below:
!. Click Start and Run.
2. Type MSCONFIG and press Enter.
3. Click the Startup tab.
4. Clear the checkboxes for hpcmpmgr.exe.
5. Click OK.
6. Restart the system.
Hopefully this will work for you and solve your problem too. I have been working for 3 days on this and finally SUCCESS!
You must have spoken with the tech I was dealing with. He was not too swift. I told them about the killing the task in the task manager. Unfortunately, you should not have to kill a task each time you shut the system down. That solution is unacceptable. You could try the msconfig approach, but that puts your pc into a 'diagnostic' mode.
I was able to click the link to diable the hpcmdmgr.exe. Once you click the link you should scroll down to the download button and download the disable program from HP. It appears to work.
Thought I had my problem solved but I don't, the only way the tech solution works is like you said putting the computer in a diagostnic mode which I don't like to do.
I am going to keep trying to install the installation files to disable the componoment manager. How long did it take you to download the installation files, when I try it, I don't see anything happening, like its not working. maybe I am not giving it long enough.
Would appreciate it if you could tell me what happened when you hit the download button? This is driving me nuts!
No, I haven't had problems with downloading until now. When I go and hit the download now, nothing happens, about how long does it take to download this file. Can I delete this folder out of the HP folder or is there anyother way to disable this without running the computer in diagostnic mode?
Warren, I wanted to thank you for your post. The HP support person was useless. After and 1.5 hours he had no idea what HPCMPMGR was used for and he did not know that the disable executable existed. I also asked him why the shutdown problem started to occur all of a sudden. I have had my printer for 3 months. He had no answer. I guess I should have expected this from someone who thought that I should always have to kill the hpcmdmgr from the task manager before shutting down my system.
I am sorry to hear this. When I download I am prompted to save the file to disk or open as is. I saved it to disk. This took 20-30 seconds (I have a fast cable modem). I couldn't tell you why this is taking you so long.
Hi, thank goodness I found this thread. I was having the same probs with that stinkin' program. Thanks for the prog to disable it. The only thing that I can think of that caused me to start having this problem is when I installed a firewall. Thanks again!

I seem to have the same issue as Margene; I cannot download from the HP website. Can you send me the needed file?
Thanks,
Jay
