Sigmatel Audio Driver Line in and Microphone issues

How can I get the Line in and Microphone inputs to produce sound through the speakers ?
The input is present, but no sound.

Has anyone else had this problem ? (Dimension 9200 PC, Vista Home Premium).

After a couple of weeks of pain with Dell Technical support, I have pretty much downloaded the whole plethora of drivers - and still no joy.

Can anyone recommend me a driver that will allow me to do this please ?

Dell are telling me to wait 3 weeks for a Vista upgrade from Microsoft, but after recent service from Dell Technical Support, I wont hold out too much hope.

Many thanks

Nigel

This is a known issue and reported many times on this forum.

This is the latest Dell drivers, but unfortunately I don't think it solves the problem.  Click Me

Lots of complaints about the lack of drivers for various functions or cards. Patience...they say "we're working on it."  Check back at the manufacturer's site often. Dell downloads usually will get the drivers much later.

Yeah, I'm having troubles with my microphone too. For the first week it was working fine, then out of nowhere it just stopped working completely. btw, I'm using an Inspiron E1705.

I am amazed that, if this has been reported on ths forum many times before, and so many people are having similar problems, that I had to spend in excess of 10 hours with Dell Technical support and all they could come up with was to take my PC away and re-install Vista !!!!!

Needless to say I rejected that offer flatly, as clearly it would not solve the problem. Even the PC in their laboratory exhibited the same symptoms. So why couldnt they waste time re-installing on that one instead!

Im also concerned that, if this issue has been reported previously, that Dells technical people have missed it on their own forum.

Hello,
Thanks to all you Vista pioneers for your guidance on what should be no brainer issues like getting an external mic to work with Vista.

Here is my experience with the hopes of helping the next sap you buys into a new computer with vista:

1.  I have a E1505 w Vista Home Premium (i think thats what it is called.)
2.  I have a logitech web cam and an external mic w an rca jack.
3.  I could not get the mic to work with skype.
4.  I spent 1+ hr w Dell support on this issue.  It started working but the tech did not know what he did to enable it.  I also spent 1+ hour searchin on microsoft/support to no avail.
5.  However, the next Skype session, the mic did not work.
6.  What I have observed is in Control Panel > Sound > Recording, there are two microphone settings, one is Microphone (2-USB Audio Device), the other is Microphone Line In
7.  Bottom line is when I disable the microphone line in device and make sure the 1st one is enabled, it works fine.
8.  I discovered the webcas (which is usb) has a built in mic.  I probably should have know this, but it is one of those a-hah momments.

I had the same issue: Inspiron 9400 with Vista and using the latest version of Skype with a microphone I had used on my desktop running XP.  The mic worked with Skype as long as I was shouting and had the mic right in front of my lips.  After tweaking every audio/mic setting possible and the same with Skype, I finally uninstalled the Sigmatel driver completely (after also trying a Sigmatel hack that made things worse).  After I restarted, Vista loaded default drivers and the mic worked very well once I adjusted the levels to their highest setting.  Also, Skype worked well even auto adjusting mic settings as it had done on two other computers running XP.

I was not very impressed with Sigmatel's (IDT) support site which pretty much redirected you back to Dell.  I believe Dell will work with IDT to resolve this in time as well as their MediaDirect issues with CyberLink, so this is just a workaround.
