Thank you for the suggestion. The automatic search for Video Driver Upgrades indicates that the Intel(R) HD graphics driver already installed is the best available. I have repeated the check for all drivers today and no updates were indicated. What next?
I offer an additional comment. No futher advice has been received in the past 6 weeks. Eventually, a relative suggested that I should delete the existing driver, and download a new copy. this was scary for an inexpeerienced operator, but it succeeded.
After reading a wide range of help and support screens from dell and microsoft, I found one that told me that my machine was loaded with a 32bit version of Internet Explorer and also how to run it. With the new driver, this has run all videos so fat tried.
So, problem solved- but some more detailed guidance from the centre would have pointed me to the correct advice and support and saved much time and worry. The primary help screen required seems to be as follows:-

DaveJH,
Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.
Try updating your vide card drivers to see if that will resolve the error.
