Sonic Activation Module

Hi,

from last week on, every time I start my pc enter the desktop screen, a windows installer screen pops up, which has to do with Sonic Activation Module. Firstly I don't have the cd of it, secondly I don't want this Sonic stuff on my pc. How can I stop this screen to pop up every time?

I would like to raise the question again about how one earth you get through to Dell to alert them to this annoying Sonic Activation Module nonsense.

They obviously don't read their own Dell Community Forum messages!

Has anyone any simple instructions on who to  contact and how?  I do think it needs their attention.

This isn't a Dell problem. It's a problem with the Microsoft Windows installer. There was a previous post pointing at a microsoft link to run the installer removal program or maintenance I forget. Anyway, tun that and it should work. Dell has a tech support service which isn't that great. It also has a fee service. But this isn't a Dell problem other than you didn't uninstall every piece of software that you got when Dell sent the machine and started with a blank Add/Remove program list. So it's really your fault. There's no one to blame. You could have formatted the disk and restored it from the backup copy on the backup virtual drive or the DVD.

Thanks for that claytonjudah1.  It does make things clearer.  In fact I did use the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to solve the Sonic problem myself (message 38).

As for uninstalling everything when getting the machine in the first place I do not see as a practical proposition!  I think the real problem, if it is not a Dell problem as such, is for Dell to make it easier for people to get to know what to do when they get the Windows Installer message.  Perhaps that's asking too much!

Well, it's after 2 A.M. so it's my eurocentric noncents. The problem with dell support is that cost of labor has gone offshore to one of 185 IMF sponsored new democracies. Some of these people have been urbanized and used to eat roots last week. Now you want them to clean your Sonic Activation Module. You may have signed an agreement with Dell of some kind, but have you read the fine print? Did it say that support might be provided by a tech from Niger or Pauli? As I understand it, and I used to work for a hardware vendor IBM, the vendor sells hardware. IBM also manufactured IBM software, which it supported. It did not support third party software that it sold. It referred you to that company. I don't think Dell manufactures any software. They have a wizard for patches on the support web site and you need to understand the order of which patched to download first. Aside from that. if you are really picky about the software on your system, then why not start with a clean system - nothing in the control panel, and add every piece on your own.

Paul_e123,
Thanks for the attempt fix to this mess.  However, now I get a system configuration error.  the system restore does not work.  I have traded one problem for another.  I will keep tyring other restore but this is not how this should work, or is it?

Any idea who at Dell should get the bill for my time to un do their error?

The post from Paul that seemed to work for most of us was:

Go here:http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q111006 and download the uninstaller. Run it and then the problem will be solved

Restoring your system to an earlier time will not work unless you can either restore it to a time before Sonic was installed, which was at the Dell factory. Seeing that this is not going to happen you can either format the hard drive and don't install Sonic, or you might as well give the link above a try.

As it finally turned out, the Windows Install Clean Up got rid of the thing.  The changes I had made to the config file could not be restored for some reason, perhaps a bigger problem.  I finally ren the config program and simply un did everything I did eariler.

This fix however appears to just tell the computer not to install any updates, but does not remove ones that you can't load.  Install clean up removes it.

Is Sonic Activation Module connected to Dell Media Experience? I get the error message at start up but also when I try to start the media experience.

Dear Pascal18, If you look through previous messages on this subject you will find plenty of evidence that you are not alone!  There is also good advice on how to get over the problem.
The solution I found that worked for me was to download and install Windows Installer Cleanup Utility from Microscoft.com. Problem solved!  Hope this helps - if not, use one of the other methods offered in previous messages.

I just encountered this problem with an old laptop and stumbled upon your solution.  Your post is, by far, the most informative, concise,  easy-to-follow solution I have ever found on the Internet.  Internet instructions are never unambiguous and completely successful...that is, until yours.  Thank you!!!!  This just made my day and restored my faith in Googling quick solutions, and I am studying for the bar exam right now, so making my day is no small feat.  :)  Thanks again; you rock!!
