Standy not Recommended.

How do you power off monitor and hard drive? Which is the recommended procedure.

On the dropdown under power schemes for Home/Office Desktop, mine is set System standby: never, to turn off monitor after 15 minutes and turn off hard drive after 1 hour.

Edit: I assume that you weren't asking how to turn off computer. If yes, then follow msil217's answer.

Your solution may work.;) I just said that, because my Hard-Drive NEVER powers down unless I turnoff the computer, even with the power settings. (unless I use standby or Hibernate, and those are unreliable)

Thanks Guys!! Sorry I did not make my self clearer. My under standing is that using stand by is not a wise choice.

I agree with you. I never use standby or hibernate. I have always had problems with both. My desktop seems to work fine with the settings on the monitor and hard drive, it just takes a little while for the hard drive to regain its composure.

You are correct.  The potential is there for many problems and thus the reason Standby is not recommended.

BTW, I have my PC set to "power off" the monitor and hard drives (I have two drives) at 30 minutes and have never had a problem with that configuration.
