Starting without background programs

How can you set XP to start without all the background programs.

I did this before, but can't remember how I did it. The machine runs much better, starts twice as fast and is generally healthier.

There's a way to do this through Control Panel, but I can't remember where.

Thanks

Click on Start . . run . . type msconfig  and click on the startup tab . . you can deselect any program you do not want to run at startup.

Thanks for the info.

Could you help with these questions..

1

What Services can I turn off,  and still have the PC run ok, I'd prefer to turn off as much as poss.

2

Is there any way I can turn off Local Area Network, as I cannot get rid of the icon in the toolbar. I keep setting icon to 'never show' but it always comes back.

3

I'm having trouble getting Microsoft Mouse to startup. I can put the icon in the Startup folder, but then the software control box opens every time I restart the machine. How can I get the MS Mouse software to automaticaly start when I restart the machine?

thanks
