Steganos encryption
Hi, I just tried out Steganos Security Suite 5, and have to give a sales pitch for it cuz I'm so impressed with its features. I never even heard of this type of software until I read a recent magazine article, which referred to Steganos. Anyways, refer to the website for its features, but here's what I like about it:
1- Tight encryption with 128-bit AES or Blowfish. Essentially unbreakable.
2- You can chose to just encrypt a file/folder, create a virtual drive (stored as an encrypted file - can be up to 1.2gb) that you can store files to that get encrypted/decrypted on-the-fly (fast too), or choose to hide an encrypted file within another file (stenography). So you could have a sensitive word document that's encrypted and hidden within another word document or a graphics file - and no one would guess that it contained anything but the fronting file.
3- Supposedly (haven't tested it out yet), if you email someone an encrypted and/or hidden file, the recipient does not need the software to decrypt - it's self-decrypting. You just need to give them the password.
4- And my favorite feature is the virtual drive feature to store files on - very useful when used with a laptop because if you lose it or get it stolen, no one will be able to see your info. If you have your virtual drive open, it automatically gets closed/locked when you put it into standby/hibernation/or power down. So the only way anyone could get to your sensitive data would be if they got a hold of your laptop while it was still on with the virtual drive unlocked. I have WinXP Home edition, with just one user so I can't use the built-in folder password protection.
There are some other features like password management, internet track removal, file destroyer, but I haven't really used those features.
If you're looking just to do stenography, there's Chameleon 2, which is cheaper - but it does not have all the other encryption tools that Steganos does.
Anyways, if you're a laptop user and have information you'd rather not have fall into other hands, I'd highly recommend using Steganos virtual drive encryption. The stenography feature is nice to really hide a file, but I don't plan on using it much. I'd love to hear other's experience with Steganos or other encryption software - especially on-the-fly encryption/decryption.

I have a gut feeling that you are either employeed by Steganos or a related enterprise, or trying to make a "buck".
There ad says 2048 bit not 128 bit encryption.
All the awards noted on their home page are from the 20th century and we are a few years into the 21st century.
It gets more interesting from their web page, "where to buy" all retail outlets are in the Great Britian, save one, and that is in Portugal.
I have found no major US reseller that handles the product, PC Connection, CompUSA, CDW +...+

I'm a Pediatrician.
If you read my post, you will notice I specifically ask others for their opinions of this software and their experiences with other encryption software. There are tons out there, and it's hard to shift through to find the real gems.
Now back off on the accusations.
I try to be helpful and what do I get...accusations. Next time you suspect someone, first review all their previous posts so that your post does not come across as ignorant and uninformed.
If you're going to criticize a program, at least offer some alternatives and why they are better. You seem very old-fashioned and paranoid. Just because you cannot buy a program at an outlet store does not mean it's not any good. Read the reviews of this program on PCWrold, Cnet. They DO offer a free trial version.
On another note, I ran across a program called Universal Shield. It's supposed to be able to HIDE any folder from view, I guess even from Windows Explorer with hidden files view on (Steganos can't do that). There are TONS of hiding software out there. Universal Shield seems to be the only one that enables you to allow certain programs to access these hidden files/folders (like antivirus programs). And for those suspicious types *smirk*, there is a free trial version. Has anyone tried this program or something similar?
Edit: Response to the message below following this message to reduce clutter. Yes it sounded like a sales pitch...but I DID say I was going to give a sales pitch because I liked it so much.
Am I the only one who likes to share about something good they run across to others? Seems so as posts like that are rare.

Because this is the internet age with on-line shopping. Who needs to buy a package from the retail stores - creates more waste with the boxes/packaging. And the on-line version is cheaper than the packaged version.
Because the USA is not the center of the universe - there are other people from other countries who visit this forum.
And because I am in the USA and using it. So it is available for use here, just not in a retail store. Hence, my reason for posting here to let people know about this product. You can download a trial version from the internet. If you like it, register on-line and get a registration number to activate your product. Even better than buying from retail stores - you can try it for free.

Minor note, resellers includes both on-line and bricks and mortar outlets and I
repeat who in the US sell it. I was unaware that there was a US web page I checked only http://www.stenganos.com. Actually the links you supplied were for Great Britain, not the US. Please don't wave the environmential flag, since it has absolutely no bearing on this discussion. Whether the US is or is not the center of the universe, we do have a population greater the that of Germany, Great Britain and Portugal combined, which are the only countries that the product is distributed through retail channels.

Another comment. Certain Encryption schemes/software is only for US or US/Canada use, per government regulations. e.g. My Outlook 2000, which was purchased as an "OEM' version, turned out to be an export version and only had cipher strength of 40 or 44 bit (I don't remember), I was able to upgrade it to the US/Canada Cipher strength of 128 bits.
MOPO, the subject software is only retailed (sold) in Europe as it probably falls under some Europe and/or US Government restriction or regulation on crypto devices/software for the US.
