Sun Java Run Time Environment

Question

I downloaded SUN JRE version 1.4.2_04 and find it is 107 mb in size. Version 1.3.1 was nowhere near that large. Anyone know what the differences may be? Thanks.

possumall, You didn't download JRE 1.4.2_04. That download is 14,976K in size. It can be obtained here.

Apparently the download is really compressed, for 107MB is the size of the expanded program. I never paid attention to the size of the earlier versions--1.3 may have been equally large. Java Web Start is included with the download, but it applies to developers. Sun apparently just wanted to make it available to the widest group of users possible. See this.

Well, your right. I had removed JRE through Add/Remove figuring something wasn't kosher. I went back and downloaded it again manually. The .exe file is14.6 k. Yet in  Add/Remove I am still showing a 107 mb figure. Not sure what to make of that.  Also what is the Java Web Start Icon about? Thanks Denny.

Java is 107MB.......you were looking at the compressed version.
