System Checkpoint and Restore points

When are System Checkpoints generated - automatically?

I applied a number of Windows Updates recently.  Each file was downloaded but did not install automatically - I had to close the internet connection and execute the appropriate file in WUTEMP.  In most cases the system was rebooted.  A number of Restart Points had also been created, probably by the installations.

The following evening I called MSCONFIG a number of time, to inhibit some services because the CPU was registering over 50% when no applications were running.  Again, several reboots were initiated by the system.

On checking, I found that a System Checkpoint had been created towards the end of the evening session and that all of the Restart Points from the previous day had disappeared.

Why should this happen?

myronuk,

Repeated reboots should not cause restore points to disappear, nor should visits to msconfig. Since restore points are stored on a first in-first out basis the only thing that should cause them to disappear is that the disk space allocated to them has been filled.

I somehow managed to send the incomplete message, although I had typed the full message on the screen - see edited query.

I see that you are still here - I read your links when encountering issues with my first Dell XPS R350, a few years ago.

myronuk,

It appears you are trying to ask about system restore (with minimum success). According to Help and Support:

"These restore points allow you to revert the system to a previous time. They are created daily and at the time of significant system events (such as when an application or driver is installed). You can also create and name your own restore points at any time."

Denny,

Thanks for the info that MSCONFIG does not create Restart Points.

The Restart Points I mentioned had been created on 30 November and the Checkpoint (still don't know why) had been created on 01 December.

The system said that there were no Restart Points before the date of the Dec 01 Checkpoint.

I probably made another mistake, in that I then restored the system from the Dec 01 Checkpoint because a number of MSCONFIG calls had also been made after the time of the Checkpoint and I assumed that they had been causing a BSOD in ATI2Dvag.

This 'restored' the system but had, according to Windows Update and many subsequent checks of various keys in the Registry, removed Service Pack 1(which came pre-installed with the Dell system).  I am now being informed, by Windows Update, to install SP1a.  (See a previous entry 'System Restore has lost Service Pack 1?' and replies)
