System File Check (sfc) on a Dell Dimension 3000

Hey all,

A friend of mine is having problems with her desktop PC which is a Dimension 3000. I thought at first it was malware but some really strange things have been happening which lead me to believe that it may be either a.) Hard drive failing or b.) Some corrupt system files. I would like her to run the System File Checker (sfc) but I don't know if this model came with a recovery disk or a recovery partition like my XPS Studio did. Anybody know the answer to this?

Thanks in advance. -- SCB  :emotion-43:

Assuming you are talking about Win XP, the Dimension 3000 is in the same boat as the rest that were delivered beginning in 2004.  If it was delivered after July 15, 2004, it probably has the PC Restore partition and probably was not accompanied by the Win XP installation disk.  It was necessary to ask for it, something that can probably still be done by using this form (assuming the owner lives in the U.S.):  Dell Backup CDs.

If you are speaking Linux, I'm pretty sure this machine was never delivered with that OS, and if it was, most certainly doesn't have a PC Restore partition.

You might be able to run sfc   /scannow without the OS disk. Many times the system files are in compressed files on the hard drive. It wouldn't hurt to try.

PS If you did not get a disk for reinstalling your own xps system, use the link to order your own. If your hard drive ever fails, you will need to have it. You would not be able to use the Recovery Partition since it is on the same drive. Do not ever backup to, add to or change that partition or it will be useless.

Thanks Jack and Mary,

@Jack -- she's Canadian so I'll have to find out if she bought her machine in the US or not. I would imagine that either way she would still be able to order the discs (XP Professional).

@Mary -- I'll have her try running sfc without the backup disk, but she is often a little "instructionally challenged" so I'm not optimistic about the success of going that route.

At any rate, I will let her know that she should order the backup disks regardless. In case of other emergencies e.g. reformat/reinstall. I'm already stealing myself for THAT project. LOL  :emotion-42:

Thanks again.
