Bump for a relpy.

I'm having the same problem. I've tried everything to boot in safe mode, but alas.. nothing.

Note:

Were you trying to install (driver)software for a new peripheral; if so get the latest xp driver for that peripheral. The peripheral itself may not be compatible with XP.

Possible Solution:

Restart computer. After the shutdown part of the restart process start tapping the F8 key which, if done right, will bring up the "Advanced Menu". From that menu select the option "Last Known Good..."

Yes, I have tried to load to the last point when it was ok, but it also failed.

No new peripherals or new software has been added.

On ly change was that the antivirus software had expired.

pj627,

Did you receive that error message when you booted the system after reinstalling Windows XP? It sounds like you did not, because there would have been no "Last Known Good Configuration" after reinstalling Windows.

If that is the case, reinstalling Windows may well resolve the problem. See this.
