System Restore Problems....Norton GoBack?

I know this question has been asked a few times but i wanted to verify if Norton GoBack caused me this problem...

Today i installed Norton System Works 2005, right after installation i got a splash screen asking me if i also wanted to install Norton GoBack, and after reading the description i finally decided to install it... (but this was a big mistake!) After installing GoBack i noticed that my drive space went up about 6 GB aprox. In the end i decided to uninstall it but after doing so... i was still left with the 6 GB of hard disk space used... so i decided to make a system restore see if i could knock of that 6 GB space. After selecting a point and letting SR do its thing, when windows started up i got this message "Restoration Incomplete - System Restore was unable to restore your computer to that point or date"... so i went ahead and tried other restore points and none of them wanted to work, i kept getting the same message over and over. I already tried turning System Restore off and on but nothing it just deleted all my restore points. I don't know what else to do to get rid of that extra space used on my hard drive. Any HELP would be greatly appreciated.

I run:
Windows XP Home (SP2)
Dell Dimension 4600c

Try reinstalling GoBack, and go with the "Custom" installation.
Set the amount of space you want Goback to use.

Now if you don't want to reinstall Goback:

In Windows Explorer
Go to tools--folder options

View "tab"

Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" (it will warn you but ignore, choose "yes" then OK.)

Go to the Root drive in My Computer.(local disk C) Delete the file "GoBackio.bin" That should restore your space. If not, try defrag, chkdsk, and rebooting.

Hope this helps

(p.s. I have Roxio Goback, this was before Symantec bought Goback, and hopefully, things are the same)

I can't seem to locate the GoBack.bin file, i already unchecked the "hide protected operating system files" box. I tried doing a search for the file on my computer but it doesnt come up. Any suggestions where it might be located?

Maybe GoBack removed the GoBackio.bin when you uninstalled it.

I would not know what to do at this point.

I don't recall what you did, but you did uninstall GoBack prior to using system restore?

Use search, then click find files/ folders, and type the file name in, and choose to look in all locations including hidden files. It will show the location of  the file, and directory it is in.

Yes, i uninstalled GoBack imidiately after finding out that it had used up 7GB on my Hard Drive. I guess it also removed the file because I already tried searching for it using the search feature in "Start". But wher could those Gigz be comeing from? i also uninstalled Norton SystemWorks thinking that this could have something to do with it but no its still up 7Gigz.

Should i reinstall windows to remove the extra used space?

Thanks for trying to help....

If you have backed up all of your important files, Pictures, Music, Documents, Downloaded Programs to CD or DVD, and confirmed that the CD or DVD is good, if you want, you can reformat and reinstall Windows. A clean install is best, but will wipe out all the files on the drive (unless you have 2 or more partitons)

I hope you updated Windows via windows update. But make sure you have your Firewall on, and Antivirus installed before getting on the internet (lots of nasties in cyberspace)

You are welcome!!! :)

I dumped NSW long time ago, but I did keep Go Back. It slows boot up a lot, and takes a lot of room, but if you crash from playing with something trying to tweek the system, then Go Back is a lot better than Restore. I could never get Restore to work, even with Dell's tech support helping. SO I stay with Go Back, I just increased my HD to 60 gig. :smileyvery-happy:
