System file checker can't find files on XP CD

I tried running the Windows XP system file checker. I used the sfc /scannow command and it seemed to be running. Then it asked for my XP installation CD. I put in my Dell XP disc for reinstallation of Windows XP but it could not find the files on the disc. I checked my computer and the disc does show up in the CD drive. Anybody have any ideas? This is on a Dimension 4600.

Thanks, Nick

njkatz,

Does the operating system version on the reinstallation CD match what is installed in the computer? That is, if you have Windows XP SP2 installed on the computer does the reinstallation CD include SP2 or is it perhaps XP SP1?

chuket,

I checked that page and my registry and computer. I already have the i386 folder at C:/ and that is where the registry is pointing.

Denny

I do have SP2 installed. I tried putting in the SP2 disc, but it said it is the wrong disc. Is there some way around this? My original disc is SP1.

Thanks, Nick

This may look complicated but it's really not if you follow the directions to the tee.

http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html

Scroll down to:

How to use scannow sfc...

Basically you copy the i386 folder from the CD to C:\ and procede from there. You may already have the i386 folder on C:\. You'll have to do a search for i386 and if it's located on C:\ you won't have to copy it there. Then follow the directions from the site.

But if you have installed SP2, it should have created a folder C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles which includes its I386 folder with updated SP2 files and sfc should be looking there as well as or instead of C:I386 and the

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

has the values

Source path  whose data is C:\
ServicePackSourcePack  whose data is c:\windows\ServicePackFiles
ServicePackCachePath whose data is c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\ServicePackCache

You could check that you have the folder C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles and its I386 subfolder and that those keys are in the registry.

JRosenfeld,

OK. I checked that. I do have that folder and I do have those registry entries exactly as you stated.

Thanks, Nick
