System won't boot up and get BSOD.
I have a Dimension 4700 Bios Version A09 Pentium 4 CPU 2.80 GHz 512 MB RAM DDR2 SDRAM.
Several days ago I downloaded 3-4 Driver updates from the Dell site which were recommened. I thought I had restarted my computer before I left for work, but apparently hadn't. When I returned home later in the day I found many error messages on my desktop, which I closed but never paid attention to what they stated. I restarted my computer and have been unable to boot to Windows XP and get the BSOD often.
My messages vary: "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps: Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. Check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption and then restart your computer. Technical Info: ***stop: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x84DD32D8, 0xC0000102, 0x00000000)" Unfortunately I can't disable, uninstall or check anything as my computer has to be cold booted to shut down.
Upon restart I'll get that and another message: "windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: system32\drivers\NTFS.sys You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup CD-ROM (which I never got) select "r" at the first screen to start repair." Cold boot again.
Another message: "memory write/read failure at 1C5751A8, read 57B853B8 expecting expecting 57B857B8 decreasing available memory. memory address line failure at 1C580000, read 00000000 expecting A7A7A7A7 decreasing available memory floppy diskett seek failure (I don't have a floppy disk drawer) Drive 1 not found: Serial ATA, SATA-2 strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run setup utility". F1 brings me to all my Safe Mode options and last good configuration. Selecting any one of those brings me to BSOD: "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message (usually isn't on this screen) disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters. Check with hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components restart your computer. Press F8 to select advance startup options. Tech info: ***stop 0x0000007E,(0xC0000005, 0x00000000, 0xF79C510C, 0x79C4E08)"
I am sorry this is so long, but I don't know what to do or where to turn for help as to where I should be looking. Is this worth repairing or is my computer fried?
I was able to boot to utility partion and rand complete tests. The only ones that failed were the Memory Tests, speakers and video memory. Also the SATA DISK S/N read test only populates to 27% then restarts.

The only CDs sent with my computer were Word Perfect and one for the monitor. Can I order one through Dell and do you think this will help? I also believe I have to add more memory because just before all this happened I noticed I went from 512mb to 504mb or RAM.

I am unable to get anything on my computer except for the errors previously stated. They are a constant. Also, just out of curiosity, I tried putting the CD's (Word and the monitor) in the CD drive and the light flashed a few times, but would not run the CD's. Out of frustration and because I can only get to the BSOD, I've unplugged all connections.
My only way to communicate is from my office on a different PC (of course)

well you have a few different ones there, I would like to know which one you are getting now when trying to boot to xp without any cd-s or safemode or anything like that.
having said that you will need your xp cd to fix this I'm pretty sure

CD ordered for Windows XP via link sent, thanks. I'm assuming I should wait til I can get into Windows before I go to the drivers link? How will I know which drivers to download and will all this work even if I'm getting error messages about "memory write/read failure....decreasing available memory"?

you can call dell and ask them or look at your system details from your service tag to figure out which drivers.
but right now I'm a bit confused as to what is the error you are getting when trying to boot into windows

The error messages I'm receiving are in bold font in my original message in the order that they happen.
They are a constant. When I get the option to hit F1 (to continue) or F2 (run setup utility) I hit F1 and get the BSOD. From there I have to shut off my PC and boot up again.

I can't get into windows at all. I'm getting the same messages. (see bold fonts, original message)
I did get the Windows XP CDs I needed from Dell. I first tried to "repair" the OS and was given the message that it couldn't be completed. So, I tried the reinstall option, no luck there either. I get error messages that some components aren't being installed and at one point, I DID get a desktop with NO icons and it's not recognizing my modem connection. So, I restarted the application only to get the original messages (see bold fonts) once again and only able to get to Windows when I used the CD. At this point, Windows is not operational and I can't get to any site for direct assistance.
I'm totally lost.

at this point just reinstall xp

you need to go into your bios and set it to boot from cd.
right now your system is just a matter of time before it locks you out again.

I finally called in an expert. 3 hrs of her time troubleshooting and process of elimination. Turns out my memory was corrupt. She swapped it out and I've gone from 512 to a Gig. Problems have disappered.
Thank you again for your expertise. I truly appreciate it!:
