If you don't want to disable all Notifications just connection use "Network Connections" click on ISP for Dial-up or Broadband connection , select Properties & remove tick from "Show icon.........."
For "Network Connections" use "Control Panel" , "Network & Internet Connections" > "Network Connections".

In the right column is the download for Tweak UI. Once you download and install it, open it up and go to the section Taskbar and Start Menu. Within that, uncheck the box that says enable balloon tips. Do not check or uncheck any other programs unless you fully understand what your doing. Kip

Strange I use Dial-up & just try-ed it & it worked OK , doesn't show Connection Icon or pop-up message.
Are you sure you removed tick & exited with "OK" not "Cancel".
I think I should't have used the word icon in my original question. It's not the icon I want to remove in the systems tray but the balloon that pops up when I first connect that shows the speed. Not when I spot the pointer on the icon, that I want to keep.

Here is a somewhat simpler way to accomplish this. Go to this page http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

Kippy50 & All,

The program I mentioned will do exactely the thing you require. It will not remove the pop up when you hover. Kip

kippy50,
Thanks for the link. In looking at the link and the various choices I am not certain which would cover what I want to do. I was thinking Tweak UI ?
If I install one of items listed, can it be deleted afterwards if I wanted to?
Thanks...........................

You only need to download TweakUI.exe for XP+SP1.
Install & select "Taskbar & Start menu" > "Enable balloon tips" , remove tick.
It is only 147KB file but can be removed using "Add or Remove Programs".
