Taskbar Buttons

Hi, I was really hoping someone can help me with this.

I have had Windows Vista for a couple of months now. All of a sudden when I logged on (I am the Administartor) the other day, I noticed that my taskbar buttons would disappear once I opened up applications. Please note that the Start button and the actual taskbar are both there (this problem cannot be fixed going to the Start menu and then properties). It is very strange as when my housemate logs onto my laptop under her username, the taskbar buttons appear as normal. But when I switch users, and log in under my username, they disappear.

I would really appreciate any help on this as I have spent hours searching the internet (Windows and Dell) and I can't find anything that specifically relates to this issue.

Many Thanks

Just a guess:
Right click the toolbar and choose Properties
Click the Toolbars Tab
Make sure a checkmark is selected for Quick Launch
Apply

Check:
Notification Area Tab
Is a checkmark selected for Hide inactive icons ?
You can also customize this

Compare your settings with your housemate's.

Thanks very much for your help on that. But unfortunately I've tried both of those options many times already. The problem doesn't involve the Icons, its the actual text button of the open application that doesn't appear on the toolbar. I've also compared the settings with my housemates and they are the same.. Once again I would really appreciate any help on this.

I am now confused on what you are saying.  Can you provide a screen shot of the problem?

Hi again. I apologise but I can't seem to insert a screenshot or a file of a screenshot. So I will try to explain a bit clearer.

Say I start up my laptop and have my desktop open. I could then, for example, open two applications. One is iTunes and the other is 'My Downloads'.  If I then go back to my desktop, I should be able to look down to the bottom of my screen and see the taskbar with two toolbar buttons. One being iTunes and the other being  My Downloads. But when I look at the taskbar these do not appear, only the icons from other programs that appear everytime I start up the computer (eg Google, Dell Support, McAfee, battery life etc).

*Please note, my problem does not relate to icons, they appear on the taskbar as uaual. My problem relates to the toolbar buttons that should be appearing on the taskbar once I open an application.

Thanks again, I hope this is a bit clearer.

I found a VBS script that will fix the problem.  The only thing is that it is for XP.  I do not know if it will work on Vista.  Use at your own risk.

Look at #240
