Too Many Processes running in Task Manager (117)--am told between 25 - 35 is normal.
I'm trying to install Verizon Online DSL software from a cd-rom, which runs along with AOL. When the cd-rom is inserted, i get the following error message: "Self-Registration Error: C:\WINDOWS\system32\MacoMed\Flash\Flash\.ocx". I called Verizon about this, and the Tech said I didn't really need the disc, that he would walk me through the same process. He then had me close all firewalls & virus protection programs. Then had me pull up Network Connections from Control Panel, where he had me enter a number (192.168.1.47) he gave me for the IP address. But my computure would not do anything else from there. After entering this new IP address, I was supposed to get some type of blank boxes to select, but the next page never appeared. So then he had me right-click on the taskbar & select Task Manager, then all the processes popped up. That's when he told me I needed to contact Dell to safely End the unnecessary processes before we could continue to set up my connections for Verizon Online DSL.
Has anyone else out there had this problem? I would appreciate any advice or assistance you might have.
Thank you,
Deb : )

To reduce the number of processes at startup go to Start|Run, enter msconfig and click OK. Look up each entry on the Startup tab on this site and uncheck it if the site indicates it is safe to do so.
After this, scan your system for spyware. Download Ad-aware from here, Spybot from here and Microsoft AntiSpyware from here. Check online for updates to their databases then run them and delete all the spyware they identify.

Hi Denny!
Thank you so much for ALL your information. I'll try your suggestions. No, this computer was purchased in Sept 2004. I share it with my sister. But, yes, this is my first Dell. Yes. I am new to Delltalk. I really appreciate all the extra tips & info, as well. Thank you again. I'll let you know how it works out.
