This problem has been reported by people who have upgraded to ZoneAlarm version 5. You should be able to force the run by going to Start|Run, entering
chkdsk /x and clicking OK. Chkdsk will run when the computer is restarted.
I have also been researching this problem. Found this from Microsoft but does not contain an answer. My problem with check disc is definititely caused by the new version of Zone Alarm Pro.
From what I understand from visiting the ZoneAlarm Forums there is a fix coming for this with the next version of ZoneAlarm. I just had an interesting thing happen with checkdisc. I tried checkdisc yesterday after I upated to version 5..0.590.043. I tried to do checkdisc and it did not work. The error message was something like "cannot open volume," after I tried a Restart. Last evening I completely shut down my computer and when I turned it on this morning checksdisc ran to completion. Go figure huh? I am just going to keep version 5.0.590.043 simply because I am exhausted from spending the time uninstalling and reinstalling different versions although version 4.5 was certainly a winner where everything works. The gurus on the ZoneAlarm forum are suggesting that if you have problems with the 5.0....versions of Zone Alarm that you revert back to 4.5.

aps@sun, thanks for the info and the link. I removed Zonealarm 5, and error-checking now works.
