Trouble with XP assigning a dynamic IP address

When I try to set up my network connection to go through a router connected to a cable modem, I can't get through to the internet.

Using automatic settings to dynamically set the IP address, the status of the ethernet connection is:

IP:  169.254.16.162

Gateway 255.255.0.0

Assigned through Automatic Private Address

=====================================================

.. I expect the status to be:
IP 192.168.0.103

Gateway 255.255.255.0

Assigned through DHCP

Every other PC I have hooked up to the router has had the IP address properly assigned by DHCP.  I have the feeling this one is somehow configured for ICS - which is not wat I want - but I can't seem to figure out how to get rid of it.

I have tried to manually assign the IP address, but it still doesn't work.  I'm guessing that there's something that's getting in the way, and the improper IP address is just a symptom.

Any ideas?

Sorry - that 255.255.n.n is the Subnet mask, not the gateway.  FWIW

I suspect you're right about the autoassign address being a symptom. If ICS is installed, here's how to uninstall it (from http://www.homenethelp.com/web/faq/sharing-ics.asp#Uninstall):

In your control panel, double-click the "Add/Remove Programs" icon. Select the "Windows Setup" tab. Double click "Internet Options", and unselect the Internet Connection Sharing box. Click OK and OK again.

Another possibility is a link layer problem of some sort (bad cable, wrong cable type, bad port on router, problem with NIC). What model laptop do you have?
