Have you tried using the generic Windows driver?

I'm not sure I follow you. Under WinXP, you are not supposed to have to install anything new. When I removed and reinstalled Driver.cab, isn't that using the generic driver?

Did you get this working ? Are you using an XP driver for this camera ? You may have to do a firmware upgrade first before installing the driver; you should ask where the camera was purchased. I suggest you uninstall any driver (you might have installed) from Add/Remove or Device Manager and re-start computer. Then, with the camera NOT ATTACHED to computer, install this driver. I believe you have to do a signup. I'll take a quick look to find another download site for this driver.

You can run into numerous USB problems if you installed XP 'over' 98 or Millenium. If that is what you did I suggest you do a clean install of XP.

Not yet, but I haven't given up all hope (so far).

The OEM is obviously XP. The one from the Sony site is 98--XP.

Firmware on the camera? None on the Sony site for a P72: http://ciscdb.sel.sony.com/cgi-bin/swu-index.pl

I suggest you uninstall any driver (you might have installed) from Add/Remove or Device Manager and re-start computer.

Interesting point. Following another tip, I went into Safe mode/Device Manager and removed 4 seemingly identical "USB Root Hub"s.When I restarted, all 4 were reinstalled.

Thanks for the response. I'll try the driver at the next opportunity.

This was a spanking new computer - approx. 6 months old now.

A question, though. The owner of the computer is reluctant to do this because she was told she would have to do a complete backup/reinstall of everything. Is this true of XP?

She is correct. 4 USB Root Hubs says there's definite problems with system but I don't know how to fix that. You could run the System File Checker to verify System files are all ok but I think the answer will be more complicated than that, possibly involving editing the registry. The command for that (from Start/Run):

sfc /scannow (note space)

Doing this can only help IF when you run this command you are not prompted for the XP cd; in that case you would be replacing any bad files with files that possibly are older versions. This would likely result in problems down the road.

I would re-post this problem and hope that it gets a better answer.

emoHuh,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Try installing the chipset drivers into the system. You should have a resource cd that came with the system with the drivers on it. If you do not have the resource cd you can click the link below to download the chipset drivers for the Inspiron 600m system.

I ran SFC - it ran through without stopping or asking for anything.

Thanks for your continued help. This would be a great time for Dell rep to jump in...

Maxd,

You said:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On my Dell 8300, which comes with 8 USB ports, I have 5 USB root hub entries in device manager.

The first four are each for a pair of the USB ports (the first one shows on the power tab the two devices I have connected to those two ports, ADSL modem and printer (actually it shows USB printer support, which is also separately listed in device manager)); the fifth is for all 8 USB ports. All devices are shown to be working properly, and indeed I have no problems connecting other USB devices (e.g. USB flash memory key).

So I don't think that there is necessaily anything wrong with several USB root hub entries, it would depend on the number of ports installed.

BTW the controllers I have (OEM) are Intel(R) 82801EB USB Universal Host controllers, again 4 entries, (labelled 24D2, 24D4, 24D7 and 24DE respectively), each seem to be for 2 of the eight ports. There is also a Standard Enhanced PCI to USB controller listed.

Heavy sigh. Same results: Device Manager does the same thing.

Would it help to do some removal/reinstallation in Safe mode?

This looks like it might be the same as the one on the Sony site. Any way to tell for sure?

That's a 4 Mb file. Stick with the Sony-site driver. I don't own a digital camera so this is all over my head. That said the best I can do is suggest you uninstall the current camera-related USB driver if you can find one in Device Manager and install the newer Sony one. Her camera site is:

http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start;sid=k3-esiWn1cie_mUgR4GUuWqrpiWhlOWIb5g=?CategoryName=dcc_DIDigitalCameras_Cyber-shotDigitalCameras&Dept=dcc&TemplateName=item%2fsy_item_a&ProductSKU=DSCP72

For the 'suggested' driver I'd try this page:

http://ciscdb.sel.sony.com/cgi-bin/select-software.pl

P.S. Don't install the firmware unless/until you have the problems that the firmware covers.

Update:

I plugged in an external card reader and get similar results:

> I right-click My computer->properties->hardware->device manager->USB controllers: USB storage device = yellow flag-> properties->"drivers for this device are not installed (code 28)".

> I try to reinstall driver->"cannot install USB mass storage device, error occurred during installation, the data is invalid".

So I still think the OEM OS is the problem, not the camera or any Sony-supplied driver.

Any fresh thoughts? Anybody? (Do I sound whiny enough? LOL)
