USB port doesn't recognize Nikon L12

My XPS M1210 isn't recognizing my Nikon Coolpix L12 when I connect via the any of the 4 USB ports.  All the ports work with other devices and the camera and cable work with other Vista computers.  Any suggestions?

Also, I checked the device manager and I do have the little yellow warning sign on all 4 of the Intel 82801G (ICH7Family) USB Host Controllers.  When I check the properties, it says that "Windows can't load drivers for the hardware.  Driver may be corrupted or missing (code 39). "   Like I said, the ports work with other devices.

Please help ....

Those errors are because you plugged the Nikon into all four ports, reboot the PC and see if the errors clear up. When a usb device causes these errors, they can stay in device manager until the next restart.

"Windows can't load drivers for the hardware"  it means the Nikon hardware. Windows has failed in loading the drivers for it, or has misidentified the device and tried to install the wrong driver.

Reboot with the Nikon disconnected from the PC, check device manager, are the error's still there?.

Thanks.  I did reboot (again) with nothing in the USB ports.  I still see the yellow warning sign and see the same message in properties for the ports.    I've checked using the Dell software for any updated drivers but there don't seem to be any.  (I purchased the computer in late May.)   Any other suggestions?

With all usb devices unplugged except for the kbrd and mouse,

In device manager expand "universal serial bus controllers"

in there delete (one at a time) all the "usb hub" entries, Do Not delete any of the Host Controllers.

Have your PC set to log in automatically without any interaction from the keyboard or mouse. In other words when it boots up it goes straight to the desktop without you having to type a username or password.

Reboot the PC and Windows will reinstall them, see if anything changes.

Thanks again ... although you're scaring me just a bit.  I'm away from that computer and will likely not have a chance to do as you advise unti tomorrow am.  I'll let you know how it goes.

Do you think that getting the warning signs to go away will result in my being able to access my camera through the USB port>

Now we are getting some where, you need to re-install your chipset drivers. Don't do anything in the device manager.

Download this file

<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed / replaced from this post by Dell>

save to a folder of choice, boot into safe mode and execute the file to install chipset drivers.

Boot back into regular mode and check DM again.

Well ... in the Device Manager when I expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers,  I see the following 6 lines:

Intel (R) 82801G (ICH7Family) USB Host Controllers 27C8
Intel (R) 82801G (ICH7Family) USB Host Controllers 27C9
Intel (R) 82801G (ICH7Family) USB Host Controllers 27CA
Intel (R) 82801G (ICH7Family) USB Host Controllers 27CB

Intel (R) 82801G (ICH7Family) USB2 Enhanced  Host Controllers 27C

USB Root Hub

Sooo .... am I deleting the USB Root Hub?  (I hope it's not a stupid question given your instructions to delete all usb hub entries but I have learned that one little word can make a big difference and I'm just being careful.   Thanks.

Ok .. I'll be trying this shortly.  The download link doesn't reference Vista ... but I assume it's still ok to do this with my Vista system.  Please let me know if this isn't correct.

And things just got worse.  After downloading the chipset drivers (R140623.exe), I booted into safe mode and executed the file.    I then restarted and checked DM.    I still have the warning signs I did before but now I also have them in the Network Adapters area:

When I expand Network Adapters, I see the following, each w/ the warning sign:

WAN Miniport (IP)
WAN Miniport (IPv6)
WAN Miniport (PPPOE)
WAN Miniport (PPTP)

Network Adapters also include, without the warning:

Broadcom 440x a0.100 Integrated Controller
Cisco Systems VPN Adapter
Dell Wireless 1505 Draft 802.11n WLAN Mini Card

I did set a restore point before doing anything so I'm hoping (desperately) that I can go back if necessary although I haven't yet found any additional problems ...

Just in case anyone is interested.... I uninstalled all USB devices with the warning sign.... controller or not and I then re-booted.  The warning signs were gone AND the computer now recognizes my camera!  Since that went well, I did the same for Network Adapters.  All warning signs are gone ... and everything seems to be working well again.

I crown thee computer genius. :smileyhappy:

I was hesitant to give those instructions up font, thus my warning earlier
"Have your PC set to log in automatically without any interaction from the keyboard or mouse"

If you dont do this and uninstall the usb "controllers" you cannot log on to Windows, and will have no keyboard or mouse control until you do (but you cannot) , causing you to have a crippled PC. Then you have to do a repair install of XP, not fun.
