USB trouble installing drivers for USB flash drives
windows vista. Having trouble installing USB flash drives, jump--drivers. Windows found driver software for your device, but encountered an error while attemting to install it. USB mass storage device. This system cannot find the file specified. PnP driver not found.
Tried several Microsoft downloads, deleting infcache.1 files. Have 2 kingston data traveler flashes, managed to get one to work, one doesnt.They are identical flash drives. The flashes work fine on any other computer I have tried. Tried everything I could think of with device manager, install new hardware wizard, etc. Tried a few downloads from the dell drivers website.
Tried a USB hub--same error. Tried my digital camera, same error. However, 3 other flash(jump) drives work, as well as MP3 player--it seems there is no problem with the actual USB ports themselves--working properly. Hit and miss on which devices will work. kingston jump comes up on device manager as an "other device" with exclamation.
Frustrating, to say the least.

Have you tried the manufacturers site for the software downloads and driver?...

yes, this was a kingston data traveller; they do not have drivers to download. I did email back and forth with their tech support, did what they said, to no avail. by checking the windows/inf/setupapi.dev file, I was able to get one datatraveller to work. I bought 2, one works, one doesnt. I tried the same installation on this one, to no avail. I tried the datatraveller on another Vista computer, went right in.
I am convinced this is a windows vista incompatability, having to do with the "other device" in device manager. Out of about 9 devices(I have tried) that require my usb, I have found 4 that dont work--this kingston, a digital camera, USB hub, and another flash (scan disk)
