Unable to Boot Win XP

I took my Latitude D505 to a customer office this week and plugged it into a docking station for an Inspiron 8500. (Yes, I went brain dead because I was focusing on the customer rather than the possible incompatibilities.) Anyway, the laptop tried to boot but failed to the BSOD giving information like:

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

*** STOP: 0x00000050 (0xD1280000, 0x00000000, 0x804D9DA8, 0x00000000)

I ran the Dell Diagnostics and no problems were revealed.

I also was able to boot the laptop using MandrakeMove, a version of Linux that boots from the CD. Using this Linux boot, I did retrieve files from the hard drive and I can use the laptop.

My opinion is that there is nothing wrong with the Dell, but XP has been compromised. When I try to reinstall the OS, it too results in the BSOD with the information shown above.

Any assistance, insights, etc. is appreciated.

It might be a corrupted driver

Have a look in these places for errors
1. Right click My Computer / Properties / Hardware / Device Manager.
Look for "Yellow" errors

2. Control Panel / Performance and Maintenance / Admin Tools / Event Viewer / System.
Look for "Red" errors. Double click on error.

Thanks for the input, but  I can't get past the BSOD. There is no Windows running so I can't use the Device Manager.

Once again, I've tried the clean install but it fails during the install and returns to the BSOD with the PAGE_FAULT error.

some insight here

many of the results of a google search for PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA show it is a memory problem, but you have many sources of memory on any PC.

1. System memory  memory sticks on the motherboard

2. Virtual memory   hard disc stored data, otherwise known as page file

3. 2 different memory places on the processor

4. Video card memory

you would have to some serious research to determine which one is your problem or start replacing parts.

your stop error has the clue to what hardware device is causing it   *** STOP: 0x00000050 (0xD1280000, 0x00000000, 0x804D9DA8, 0x00000000)
