Unable to play .mpg files using Windows Media Player 11

Hi,

I can't get my computer to play .mpg files.  Other video file types don't seem to be a problem. I have a Dell Dimension 4400 running XP Home, using Windows Media Player 11 and Chrome as the browser. I've tried to fix the problem using the file type settings under Folder Options, but no luck so far. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Download and install the K lite Codec Pack.  It should fix the problem.

Thanks for the info on the codec pack, but I was able to view .mpg files until recently and then for no apparent reason lost the ability to view those files. What would have happened and how can I correct this short of downloading the codec pack?

Well, you did something, because Windows Media Player 11 has never been able to play MPEG video files.

So you're saying that someone had to have added a codec in order to play an .mpg file with Windows Media Player 11? What I'm curious about is what happened to lose that capability since I was able to play .mpg files until very recently.

Yes. I know this for a fact. I have installed WMP11 recently on several fresh installs of XP SP3, and I couldn't play DVDs which are MPEG files.
