Uninstalling Nero

Hello Good Folks of the Forum:
I have been having quite a few problems running Nero on Vista, many of which I wasn't even aware until I decided to uninstall the application. The problems I was encountering cleared up when I uninstalled this application, but it has given me a new one that is serious. I reinstalled Roxio that had been shipped with Dell's E520. I had dropped Roxio because it wouldn't open any video files, either from the Video folder or the Shared folder. I had found a 'work around' but it was a pain every time I wanted to burn a video file. This time around when I tried to run a file from one of these folders using Media Player, I could get sound but no picture. I assumed it was a Roxio problem so I contacted Dell's tech support. The guy at Dell had me totally de-energize my system. (unplug and hold the start button for 5 seconds) After restart I went to Media Player to see if the files would run. Instead I got a screen from EasyWrite which is a Nero (Ahead) product telling me to download the EasyWrite program. I tried this, but got a second screen telling me their was known compatibility problems. The tech guy informed me that this situation had come up before because Nero and Vista just don't see eye-to-eye. It seems that when you uninstall Nero, it hates to go and leaves pieces of itself behind. I had encountered this with Roxio, but was able to get rid of it by running Windows Installer Cleanup. Unfortunately, Nero is self-installed and the Windows utility will not work on it. I have sent a message off to Nero, but it looks like they intend to ignore me. Does anyone know of a good utility that will let me wipe all vestiges of Nero from my system? I can wipe my HD and reload Vista (I've had lots of practice with this since I have done it four times since February) but it is time consuming to go through the whole setup procedure and to clean out all the garbage applications that come loaded on the OS disk. I like Nero and had intended to wait until it's compatibility issues were resolved and then reload it, however if they choose not to respond it means making the rounds of the various forums warning everyone off this product.
Any help will be greatly appreciated with an award of two whole atta-boys for anyone who can give me a solution.
Regards
Powell

I too have had a lot of problems with Nero in Vista. I initially tried to install my older Nero 7, and then intended to reinstall the latest Vista version. Well, couldn't install initially, and after un-installing, could not install any version. Even tried to uninstall the remanents using the Nero Clean-out program, which also wouldn't run. E-mailed Nero several times, and finally got someone to direct me, which was the same things I had done before without success.

Befor I received the Nero e-mail, I restored to the earliest date I had (unfortunately after I tried to get Nero to install) and then manually removed many of the Nero references in the Registry. I didn't get them all, there seem to be thousands!!!

I then ran the Clean-up program recommended in the e-mail. The program gets to where you select the Nero folder location, which I didn't have since most had been removed. The original Clean-up would stop here. The new one continued and ran quite a while to do it's job. I then installed the recommended version of Nero 7, and it actually installed. It is now working well.

The Clean-up program is:

The recommended Nero 7 download is:

I don't know if this Clean-up version is the first one I tried, as I removed EVERYTHING Nero before I got mthe message.

Nero is nthe best burning program out there by far. I tried several freeware programs before getting Nero to install, and they are mostly junk.

Good Luck!!!

Muchas Gracias KirkD. I will definitely give it a shot. I agree, Nero is head and shoulders above the rest. My problem with them this time is not that they haven't offered a solution (sometime they just don't know) but when they don't even acknowledge your concerns I get real twitchy about how they will respond when it is a catastrophe.
Thanks for your reply and take tweo atta-boys from the cookie jar.

FWIW, I have Nero 7 Ultra and with the next to last update, they made it Vista compatible.  I don't have any problems with Nero 7 Ultra.

One note, if you still had Sonic DLA installed or Roxio Drag to Disc and then Installed Nero including InCD there can be conflicts.  Only one packet writing program (UDF Program) can be installed.  In my case I have Roxio Drag to Disc installed and when I installed Nero 7 Ultra I did not install InCd.

Thanks Fireberd:
As far as I know I had the latest updates from Nero. At least they kept telling me I was up to date every time I reinstalled the application. No, I did not have InCD installed, even after I had unloaded Roxio. At least I think Windows Installer Cleanup had gotten Roxio out...but who knows for sure. KirkD sent me a link to Nero's cleanup utility and I ran it. I am not sure if this got it all because, just like magic, some Nero files showed up in Explorer. Nothing, however, in my program files...so maybe I got lucky. I'll have to wait for a while to try it since during all this messing around the video files have vanished. At least Media Player tells me it can't locate them. The icons were still in my Video files but nothing else. Thanks for the info and, if you play the Dobro as well as that peddle steel, you can have a whole bunch of atta-boys.
Thanks again

I've worked with Bill Box, who worked for Bill Monroe in the early 70's.  I have a dobro simulator (electronic device) that I use with my Pedal Steel.  It's so realistic that I've fooled several Bluegrass pickers. :smileytongue:

Howdy Fireberd:
That's great my friend. I had an album full of Dobro music...Shot Jackson, etc.  But my second wife relieved me of that one along with the rest of my music collection. I've got most of my stuff back via P2P, but dobro music is pretty scarce. I used to mess with the five string and guitar, but life got in the way. I worked out of the country quite a bit. Now that I'm retired maybe I'll pick it up again, if I can get the fingers to work. I sure is nice to chat with you. Shoot me a line anytime. I don't know how fussy they are about personal stuff in this forum, but you can always drop me a line at llewop@shaw.ca. Take care and be well, pal.
