Unwanted "Automatic" Dial-Up Connection
My Dimension 4600 w/Windows XP, SP1 is irregularly connecting via my dial up service at start-up and at other seemingly random times. I have a strong suspicion that this is related to the McAfee "Security Suite" as, at least a couple of times when the system has done this I have gone to McAfee, disabled/exited it and then been prompted for disconnection (I have the Auto Disconnect option set--this is behavior that I DO want). Short of uninstalling McAfee, is there a solution that will PREVENT my computer from connecting at it's own whim but WILL allow it to connect automatically whenever I start either IE or OE? I have set the internet options/connection to Dial When No Network Connection present (had it previously set to Always dial my default connection). I tried the oft suggested solution of "Never dial a connection", but do not want to have to manually initiate the connection every time I intentionally start an internet enabled application (namely IE and OE). With the current setting of "Dial when no network connection is present" the connection does automatically dial-up up when I start OE but not when I start IE. Any suggestions/hints/etc. would be most appreciated).
TIA,
Paul

I found the setting that might be similar (it was kind of buried), so I am going to reset my dial up option to always... and see if the annoying (intolerable) connecting has ceased. I'll post again if it has, meanwhile if anyone has any positive (certain) thoughts, I'm still open for that too.
Thanks,
Paul

Do you have Mcafee set to automatically look for updates? It might be doing that at startup.
I have Norton AV, and have turned off automatic updates (I use manual updating, so I know what's going on); I expect there must be a similar option in McAfee.

Not sure what this affects as never tried it although my Default setting is 1 & my computer doesn't auto connect.
Windows has the option to automatically dial your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to establish an Internet connection. This option can be controlled using this tweak.
Open your registry and find the key below.
Create a new DWORD value named "EnableAutodial", and set the new value to equal "1" to enable autodial or "0" to disable it.
Restart Windows for the change to take effect:
Settings:
User Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Internet Settings]
Name: EnableAutodial
Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value: (0 = disabled, 1 = enabled)
--------------------
You could also check "Network Connections" , "Advanced" > "Dial-up Preferences"
& the Default is "Enable autodial......"
but tick "Always ask me......." that way it a program attempts an auto connection will you get a Network Connection POP-UP with option to auto dial on not.
It will show the program attempting the auto dial.
------------------
Edit:
Also check "Administrative Tools' > "Services" & scroll to "Remote Access Auto ............." click on it check "Startup..." is set to "Manual" if still having problem try setting it to "Disabled".

When it start dialing, it begins before my computer even finishes the boot sequence. One attempt after another. Somewhere along the way I thought
maybe it was Windows update doing it. I don't have McAfee. I do have Norton, but it's auto update usually occurs when I'm doing mail. and it tells me about it. Is it possible a Microsoft update could be doing it??
