Update for Windows XP (KB967715)
Update for Windows XP (KB967715) Install this update to resolve an issue in which AutoRun features were not correctly disabled. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.
This update has shown on my update list 35 times between starting on 02/28/09 and 03/22/09. I know I haven't done it 35 times!! I discovered this when I reviewed my update history on the Windows Update page on my Tools drop down bar. The times I installed the update was when it showed up as that yellow shield icon on my menu bar at the bottom of my screen. What I know is that I haven't seen the icon 35 times in 22 days and therefore it seems that it is automatically installing this update as well as me doing it. I shut down and restart the computer every day.
So two questions. One, what is AutoRun and why does this update seek to disable it? Two, does anyone know why and how it is that this update is obviously not working? It can't be a good thing that there have been 35 installations of this update.
Thanks for all assistance you can give.

It seems you're not the only one with multiple installations of this update. Read here for example.
And there's a work-around for the problem of being offered this update multiple times here. It's not from Microsoft, so use with caution. And there's this from Microsoft about multiple offers for an update.

Autorun is a functionality for optical drives, network drives or other removable drives (eg. an external USB drive). One use, as explained in
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=967715
is for software installation CDs to start the install when you insert a CD. It also controls the Autoplay feature on optical drives (if you right click on an optical drive icon in Windows Explorer, click Autoplay tab, you will find options on what you want to happen, depending on the type of CD inserted). You can also turn off the feature for specific types of drives as detailed in the article. For example, I have disabloed Autorun on my External USB drive.
The update does not seek to disable Autorun. What it does is correct the previously available information on how to disable autorun for those that want to disable it for some drives.
I can't answer your question as to why windows update is reinstalling that update repeatedly. Maybe it did not get installed properly, or the information about it being installed has got corrupoted. It should appear in the list of updates in Add/remove (make sure the box show updates is checked), scroll down to Windows XP updates, look for an update with (967715). If you are using automatic updates, turn it off for now, uninstall that update, then in IE, Tools go to Windows update, let it scan your PC, it should offer you that update, install it from there. See if that resolves the problem. Turn on automatidc updates if you wish (I don't use it myself, prefer to chack manually for updates).
