Upgrade to XP and can't use My Computer

I just upgraded my trusty Dimension XPR 450 from win 98 t6 XP. Almost everything seemed to work, but whenever I try to go to any form of My Computer (icon, Windows explorer, powerdesk & in programs) I may see it for an instant but then it vanishes, my screen goes blank (actually blue, but not a blue screen of death) and then my desktop is restored, minus whatever program I was trying to use.

I've reinstalld XP twice, checked out the disk several times, weeded out registry errors (with OnTrack System Suite 4) but it doesn't seem to make any difference. I have no idea what the problem might be. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Actually, I just got some more (hopefully) useful information. When I rebooted I got a message that the "background task server encountered a problem and needed to close".

When I checked for more data I got an error signature of "szAppName: MXTask.exe  szAppVer: 4.1.0.7  szModName: msvcrt.dll  szModVer: 7.0.2600.0  offset: 000032011d".

When  I clicked for more technical information I got: "The following files will be included in this error report:

... \Locals~1\Temp\WER2.tmp.dir00\MXTzsk.exe.mdmp

... \Locals~1\Temp\WER2.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt,

Neither file appears on my either the R450 or my other computer running XP, so I assume that they are a problem from installation. However, that still doesnt give me any idea what to do about them.

Once again: Help!

The problem may be caused by OnTrack System Suite 4, I think MXTask.exe is an .exe file for that program. Check C:\Program Files\Ontrack\
If that is the case, you may want to uninstall Ontrack.

Thanks for the help.

Getting rid of Systemsuite got rid of the error message, but has not solved the inability to access My Computer. However, I was able to see it for probably 30 seconds before the screen went blank so that's some progress, maybe. But the main problem is still there, so I guess I need more help.

You may want to do a Windows XP Clean Install.

As the files that are trying to load are in your temp folders this is probably a malware infection, Try the following:-
---------------------
Use these to remove Malware (Spyware and Adware).
Spybot S&D
Ad-Aware
Cwshredder
With all of these download them, install (after unzip if required), download the latest signature/update file, run, delete all that they find.

Failing those solving your problems a post of a hijackthis log for the experts to advise.
HijackThis From Here
Download, run, scan, save log, then in notepad copy the FULL log by copy and paste to a post in one of these specialist spyware removal forums:-
http://tomcoyote.org/forums/index.php
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php
http://www.net-integration.net/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi
http://boards.cexx.org/index.php
DO NOT FIX ANYTHING WITH HIJACKTHIS WITHOUT EXPERT ADVICE, most of what it finds you need for normal MS Windows tasks.
Do read the sites FAQ before posting, and advise your problem and what steps you have already done to try to cure your problem.

I am in all those sites as ChrisRLG. You might get me, but any of the more problematic ones are handled by the experts. If you get a 'advanced member' like me, we have other ways of asking for advice from the experts, to pass on to you.

You could post your log here in this thread (if in the Virus Information and Removal Board - if not post in that board not in this thread), and I will have a go at giving advice, but if you go to one of the more specalist forums more experts will be able to help.

Thanks.  Good link. Will try that when I have the time to back up and restore both hard drives.
