Upgrading hard drive

Hi,

I'm wanting to upgrade to a bigger hard drive and I'm wondering what the best way to do this is. Once the new drive is formatted etc, can I just clone the main OS partition (not the Dell Utilities and Dell Restore partitions) and put that onto the new drive filling the whole space or will that then cause boot problems without the Dell Utilities and Dell Restore partitions there?

You don't need the Dell partitions to run Windows.  If you use a clone program such as Acronis True Image to do the cloning you should be OK (you don't need to first prepare or format the hard drive).  If you want to just "copy" the "C" partition to the new hard drive that will not work, you need a special program to do that.

If you want to maintain the Dell partitions and the "C" partition you can also do that with Acronis as it can copy all partitions.

Hi Fireberd,

Thanks for your reply.

I was thinking of using Drive Image XML to clone just the C partition and then clone it to the new disk using up the whole space. Will that work?
