Using XP, no powerdown

After installing XP Home on my Dell Dimension, shutdown gives me "It is now safe to turn off your computer"; but no automatic powerdown. Prior operating systems gave me no trouble in this respect. Anybody know the problem?

Did you install the chipset drivers? It sounds like it has not properly detected the power features of the machine.

Found the answer via a Microsoft message board:

start/control panel/power options/APM

Click on Enable APM Support

Powerdown works fine now. Nothing in the installation instructions indicates that you check this if your computer has the powerdown capability.

Thanks anyway, Peter.

At least you figured it out. You might have some old hardware (without ACPI). I don't even have that option on my machine.
