Vista bug? Mouse pointer not calibrated correctly
Hi
This is a problem I've had since I bought my new PC. I'm running Vista and I suspect the problem is with that.
My mouse pointer is not where my screen tells me it is. It's several pixels away and this makes it difficult, and sometimes impossible to work properly. For example if I want to resize a window, I move my pointer to one of the corners. I only get the resize cursor when I've moved my pointer away from the corner and OFF the window by quite a few pixels.
I've set my pointer scheme to NONE and have changed my screen resolution (as recommended in a different forum). Nothing helps. It has nothing to do with my mouse settings.
The problem isn't consistent either - it seems to depend on what software package I'm using.
I asked Dell to help but they told me I would have to pay. I explained that this problem existed since I bought the computer but they said I'd left it too long to tell them. I left it so long because I used to be able to work around the problem. But now I'm using design packages a lot and I need my mouse to be accurate. Dell said that because it had been so long it could be that I'd installed something which had upset the mouse - I explained again that this problem had been present since day 1. I paid for a 4 year warranty but it seems that if you install anything then that warranty is void. That sounds like a con to me.
Anyway, enough moaning. Has anyone else had the same problems with the mouse pointer?
Thanks

clairenw,
Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.
Have you connected a different mouse to the system to see if the problem is still present? I have not heard of this issue before and am trying to find out some other information.

Hi
I did try a different mouse but had the same problem. I got so fed up with it that today I paid for Dell to sort the problem out. They installed new video drivers remotely and that sorted the problem. It's wierd cos I checked for drivers recently myself and couldn't find anything. So, all in all I'm not really impressed that I had to pay for something which wasn't my fault, but at least my mouse is working correctly now. Sorry, just a bit fed up as it took about 3 hours all in all!
I had 2 other problems which the Dell rep couldn't resolve without reformatting my PC: WMP won't run, won't uninstall and won't reinstall, and I can't install a new version (12) as I believe this won't run on Vista. And on right-clicking any file in the file browser I get 2 windows popping up:
"Windows installer - preparing to install" followed by "Adobe Acrobat 8.1.0 - Please wait while Windows configures Adobe Acrobat 8.1.0 - Gathering required information...".
Thanks for replying though :)

That mouse issue is a well-known problem with the Aero feature in Vista. Turning Aero off in Vista is the simple work-around, but an updated video is the real fix which is what you did. Too bad you didn't come here first for free help... :emotion-5:
As for the problem with Acrobat 8.1.0, that sounds like a job for the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. The Acrobat installation either failed (and Acrobat won't run) or the installer failed to update the log file to say the installation was complete. Read this from Microsoft. Then download the Cleanup Utility and run it. When it gives you the opportunity, point it at Acrobat 8.1.0 and let it clean up the mess. Reboot when it's done

Hi I posted the mouse problem on several forums a while ago and never got a response. This is the first forum I've been to where someone's actually replied! So thank you :emotion-1:
I already have windows installer cleanup and have used it successfully before. I just tried to run it and now get a windows script host error:
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling windows installer cleanup utility but keep getting errors. I'm thinking "can", "worms", "opened" . :emotion-7:
..... [edited] - have just successfully reinstalled it - will try to clean up my acrobat mess now. Thanks for the advice

Next time you have a problem (but hope you don't!) come to DC first. :emotion-5:
Let us know if the Installer Cleanup fixed the Acrobat problem.
BTW: Have you scanned for malware lately? This might be the time for a thorough check-up.
