WINDOWS XP - RESTART BUTTON
Hi there,
Why is it my PC will shutdown when I click the 'Restart' button'?
I've been searching high and low for a solution thru the Search engines but to no avail. Thought u guys might have the answer to my problem(s). Thanks.

The only button on a Dimension 4300 is the power button. There is no "restart" button.

Denny,
Oops, I'm so sorry. Guess, you reli know your trade - nobody can hookwink you.
I'm referring to the 'Start' n ' Turn Off Computer' shown on the bottom-left of the screen, where it gives you three options, 'Standby', 'Turn Off' n 'Restart' in Windows XP. In the past, I could restart my PC by clicking the 'restart' 'button; but this time it shuts off my PC completely.

Have you disabled anything in msconfig?
Windows Washer 5 has caused this problem.

Thank you both for trying to help.
Did try to enable all the startup programs in msconfig but the problem still prevails, i.e. to say, clicking the 'restart' is as good as clicking the 'turn off' button. I can't recall deleting any program except downloading a freeware prior to this problem.

Denny,
Thanks again. My PC is working fine now. I did a run on "SPYBOT" and rebooted.
Oops, the term 'rather then' should read 'rather than' (my typing is reli lousy).
A million thanks to all concerned.

If the problem were reversed (shutdown caused restart) Microsoft's KnowledgeBase could help, but like you I was unable to find anything relating to Restart causing a shut down. You might see if the "generic" fix for XP problems will make any difference. Run System File Checker (Start|Run, type sfc /scannow (space between "sfc" and "/") and click OK. That will replace any missing or corrupted Windows sytem files.
