What can I use for a boot disk with CD-ROM support?

I am trying to find  the Dell Knowledge Base Article referred to in the following Dell website search answer so that that I can have a boot disk since I have no floppy drive  (Dell Dimension 1100 with only one 80gig hard drive and a CD/DVD):

. In order to run the diagnostics you must boot to an MS-DOS prompt. If necessary create a DOS boot disk. For more information, refer to Dell Knowledge Base Article TT1014475 -

"What can I use for a boot disk with CD-ROM support?"

It is not a Microsoft Knowledge Base number.  Where is the Dell Knowledge Base?  I searched on the Dell website, and many answers telling me to refer to that Dell Knowledge Base article,  resulted from my search.  This is like Catch 22.

If the Knowledge Base is a defunct tool, could someone please answer the question about a boot disk?  Thank you.

the dell resource cd should be bootable.. and run the hardware tests.  also check out goodells.net  at bottom right of screen 2 links.
if u dont have the resource cd... dell is friendly about media replacement unlike HP. :smileywink:

Yeah, it's kind of a hassle when Dell changes the document numbers and doesn't cross-link the old document number in the search index.  Instead of looking for the TT number, do a search on the title:  "What can I use for a boot disk with CD-ROM support?" and you'll find it under the new "Journal" number.

You can also find plenty of generic DOS boot disks with CD support on www.bootdisk.com, but the document you were looking for should get you going.

NoLo813:  Thanks so much for the help.  I do have the Resource Disk, but I did not know what info is on it.  I had
forgotten about it.
I went to the Goodell site and followed the links.  There is so much valuable knowledge.  You have been a terrific
expert!  Thanks again.

dg1261:  Actually, I wasn't asking the question properly.  What I mean is that, since I have no floppy drive, how can I make a boot disk using a CD?  bootdisk.com had directions for this and so much other info...what a great site! Thanks so much!  Could you explain the difference between a CD and CD-ROM.  I know what CD means and what ROM means,  I am confused.  Regardless,  NoLo813 told me I can use my Dell Resource CD to boot.

Also, I asked my question with different wording, but the Journal number did not come up;  however, a    KB      search box did appear on the right.  So, now I know how to access both.  I am so glad you explained to me about the Journal because I was so frustrated.  Dell should crosslink the two as you suggested.  It would make such sense to do so.  You have no idea how whacko I would get when I would get no answer to things that are exclusively Dell made, etc. and could find no access to that darn KB. Thanks...I really appreciate it.  I thought I was the only Dell consumer that couldn't find the KB!

Specifically, a CD-ROM is a type of compact disk formatted for computer data, while the broader term "CD" encompasses disks for non-computer uses as well, such as music.  When talking about computers, just consider both terms to be one and the same.

dg1261:  You have been a tremendous help.  I have about 30 questions specific to my Dimension 1100 (like:  certain error messages recurring, whether to update certain drivers, issues w sys restore, etc). Other than a never-ending phone conversation with tech support, any ideas where I can get some reliable help?  Is it proper to ask individual questions that are peculiar to my computer on this forum?  I have checked the resources on the Dell website.  I let these questions go unanswered for way too long, and now I have to get Windows and my computer behaving again.  I may have to reinstall everything.  Any suggestions?  Thanks again.  You are the wizard!!

Any of these Dell forums are the place.  Public forums like this tend to be relatively reliable because everyone can see the responses.  If somebody is providing incorrect information, somebody else will jump in with a correction.

It's okay to ask a couple questions in one msg, but to keep the dialog on topic the questions should be related.  If you've got lots of questions, split them up and post in the right forums, depending on whether the questions are related to hardware, the operating system, or third-party software.  (Do not crosspost the same question in multiple forums--choose the most appropriate forum for the question and post only there.)

To be considerate, spend some time with the forum search function beforehand.  If you have lots of questions, chances are some of them have already been answered before.

Thank you, once again.  I understand the proper approach.  I really do look through many sources and searches before I post.  The archives have so much to offer.  Now that I can finally get to both the Jourrnal and KB, it should solve at least half of my problems.
But at this moment, I think the best approach is to call tech support with so many of these very individualized questions. You've been so generous with your knowledge, and I appreciate it.
