Why can't GIF files be opened using explorer in Windows XP?

When I had Windows 98SE I could open GIF files using Explorer as the default. They had the GIF icon. Now, they have to be associated with a program. I had some of these files stored on floppys using Windows 98. Now, Windows XP will not open them. What happened? I do not like XP!

Thanks for any help!

Moon Child,

Internet Explorer is a program and it can open .gif files. Find a .gif in Windows Explorer. Right-click it and select "Open with" from the context menu. Click the "Choose program" link at the bottom of the context menu that opens. Scroll down on the list of applications, click to select Internet Explorer, then check the box that tells Windows to always use that application for that file type.

Denny,

That worked in Windows 98, but in XP I don't get Internet Explorer as a choice in the list. Also, why can't I open floppys made using Windows 98 on XP when they have GIF files on them? I do not like XP!!!!!!!!

Moon Child,

I can't imagine why IE is not on the list, but you can set it as the default another way. Open Windows Explorer and go to Tools|Folder Options|File Types tab. Scroll down to GIF and see what is listed as the application it opens with. (You mightpost that here just for generatl information.)

Click the Change button. The program listing will appear. Since Internet Explorer is not on it, click the Browse button. A dialog will open with the Program Files folder on it. Open the Internet Explorer folder and click iexplore.exe then Apply or OK out.

Moon Child,

*.gif files can be opened by Internet Explorer in any Windows operating system.

Yes, I'm sure I'm on XP.

If you have Microsoft Office installed, the default program for opening gif files is Microsoft Office Picture Manager. But as Denny said, you can easily change that ....just follow his instruction. You can't mess anything up so don't be afraid to play around.

You will find the "Folder Options" in your "Control Panel". After then clicking of the "Files" tab, scroll down to "gif" and then click it ONCE to highlight it. It will then tell you which application is used to open it and there is a "Change" button to change to a different application. You can always change back later if you wish.
