Why is LanmanServer hanging? Did he do something wrong?

Can anyone help me with this? I'm not really sure if this has anything to do with my recent attempt to upgrade to Vista, but the problem started after I did.

After I upgraded to Vista Home Basic, my Inspiron 700m takes about 15 to 30 minutes to load completely. The desktop appears promptly enough, but then I have to wait forever for the programs to load. According to the "Problem Reports and Solutions" function in Control Panel, it seems to involve the Lanman Server, whatever that is, which is "hung" upon startup. This is what the report says:

Description:
Service Server hung on starting.

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: ServiceHang
Service Name: LanmanServer
Image Name: srvsvc.dll
Image Version: 6.0.6000.16386
Service Type: 20
Start Type: 2
OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.768.2
Locale ID: 1033

Files that help describe the problem:
Version.txt
minidump.mdmp
I have a hunch that it has to do with some programs Vista doesn't like, but then I don't know much about computers. I have to say, it sure gave me a hard time with Norton Antivirus 2006; Vista and Norton just don't seem to get along. Can anybody offer some words of wisdom?

By the way, about a week ago, before I upgraded, a blue screen with the words "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" suddenly appeared at startup. I tried out a solution I found on the web, which involved running the CHKDSK function using the Windows XP Recovery Tool, and the problem was resolved. Could this have anything to do with the current problem?

about going on the internet see if your problem goes away!!
I would willing to bet it does.

Did you also run FIXBOOT after running CHKDSK  /R? That fixes the Unmountable boot volume error. Also you need to remove Norton and install a Vista compatible antivirus. Norton 2006 is not Vista ready. Uninstall it and download a freebie like AVG's antivirus for Vista or upgrade to Norton 2007. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/us/frt/0

Not all security software is "Bloatware" like Norton and McAfee.  I'm using the Windows Live One Care and it's not "Bloatware" and doesn't slowdown my PC.  You can download a free 90 trial version from MS.

I actually did finally figure out that I had to uninstall Antivirus 2006 about 10 hours after I started the Vista upgrade. Then it took me another 5 hours to figure out that you can't do it through Control Panel, and you need that thing called the Norton Removal Tool (why does Norton have to make life so complicated?). I installed Antivirus 2007, but you guys may be right; deleting Antivirus altogether may make my laptop run wake up faster. If that's the case, how ironic. The thing that's supposed to prevent my computer from getting a cold is giving it a cold.

What is Lanman anyway? I knew a guy back in college with the same name.

What is Lanman anyway?
 I do not know
But i do know Norton is a lot of trouble to start with ,
Like one person said the best tool Norton ever made was the tool to
remove it and go with a good AV program not Norton or Mcafee.
Avast free 4 home use is good also www.avast.com

LANManServer is the service that controls the LAN ( Local Area Network ) Service. There is a key in the registery under HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services that controls the parameters for how this service reacts and is set to function. If something is awry there it could cause some problems.

I do not recommend editing thisunless you know what you are doing as a bad edit could render the PC inoperable.

No, defininitely won't fiddle with anything that might lead to a new laptop purchase.... But it is curious that there aren't more resources on this problem, as I've found a comment from another user who experienced the same situation. This user went into msconfig and disabled the Server function. My bank account is persuading me not to try that....
