Why memory [RAM] is shown less than what has been installed under vista' system:

I have installed extra RAM on my computer.

Mine was running on 2GB that came with the computer a year ago.[2R x 8 PC2-4200-444-12.E3]

I put in 2x 512MB sticks.[PC2-4200 DDR2 1.8v 533MHz]

On my setup [F2] screen tells as 3GB

But on my vista system information reconises RAM as 2814MB. However prior to my installment of the 2 sticks of 512MB the vista system did show the exact amount 2048MB!!

Why is that the full-installment of RAM  not recognised in my VISTA Home Premium 32 bit OS?

32bit OS will only address approx 3Gb of RAM....approx beacuse it varies from system to system. I have 4Gb but my system shows as 3.069Gb....the most common amount appears to be 3.25Gb.

To enable 4Gb (or more) of RAM to be addressed, a 64bit OS needs to be installed. Dell do not sell a 64bit OS system. Doing this creates more issues with regards compatibility and does not appear to be worth the hassle.

If you search this forum you will find many threads on this subject.

Cheers

One of the changes in the upcoming SP1 is that in many panels it will report the actual installed memory.

My 32 Vista Home Preminum with 4GB installed shows "3326MB"

Your system will "see" less than typical for 4GB installed. The 1GB video card is the problem. Someone with dual 512MB cards anly had 2.75GB. This is because Windows reserves some of the high address space for addressing things like the video card. The memory is not being used, only the address space. 64-Bit Windows can only address a total of 4GB. This has been covered a lot in the Forums and on the Web. You would have the same amount usable with only 3GB installed.

Did you install SP1? If you did it will say 3GB. Keep in mind that video and audio devices may take away system RAM.

Since you have only 3GB, the 4GB stuff others mentioned do not apply

Sorry, I misread your RAM content. What I said is still true. No matter how much RAM you have, the OS reserves RAM address space, not the actual RAM itself.

If you had a typical 256-512MB video board, you would have 3.07GB usable RAM. With your 1GB video, the system uses ~1.25GB of address space for the video address space and other addressing needs. Microsoft has an equation to calculate the loss of address space for any particular flavor of Windows if you are interested in searching for it.
