Will Dell OEM OS Install to New Drive?

I'm helping a friend install a new Western Digital hard drive. She has an old Dimension 8200 that came with a Dell Windows 2000 installation disk, a Dell XP upgrade disk, and a Microsoft XP upgrade disk.

My question is this: If we install Windows 2000 and the XP upgrade to the new hard drive, will the installation software recognize the PC as a Dell and allow the install, even though the hard disk is new?

Thanks!

Hi,

Yes you can install Windows XP on to the new Hard Drive you have purchased. It determines whether its a dell system via the BIOS of the computer. Also you said you would upgrade from 2000 to XP. If in case you want to work with XP you can install XP directly rather than installing 2000 and then upgrading. Boot through the XP upgrade disk and while the installation in progress, it would ask you to insert the previous OS disk(2000). follow the onscreen instruction. In this you have to reinsert the cd's couple of times. Ensure you have proper drivers for you computer for XP.

The Windows 2000 drivers for the Dimension 8200 are:

  • Intel INF Chipset Update (850 Driver)
  • Intel ATA Ultra
  • AD 1885 Audio Controller
  • Yamaha Wave Table Software
  • Video controller
I would be surprised if WinXP did not have all of the required drivers built in, however.  Once you have XP installed, check Device Manager (Control Panel > System Properties > Hardware tab > Device Manager button) and check to see if anything shows up with a ?, ! or red X on it; if it does then you will need a driver for that device.  If you don't see a ?, ! or red X, then XP has all the drivers the system would need (although updates that work better than the MS drivers may be available).
