WinZip Freshen/update

Hello
Subject: Freshen an existing winzip Archive
When I follow the winzip instructions for the subject no update takes place. When I return to the archive and view the individual files they have not changed. For example: I select E:\*.* and freshen from the drop down window and push the freshen with wild cards button it will go through the motions (it will show the green progress bar)but the files in E:\*.* Archive are not changed. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Thanks for your help.

I'm not sure from your post:

Have you changed the data in specific files in the archive? Or have you added files to the folder that you now want archived?

You probably already know this, but Freshen only updates changes to the files that are already in the archive.  Update and Add Files will add any files that are in the folder but not in the archive as well as updating files already in the archive.

Are the files you want to freshen still in the same folder and with the same names they had when you originally archived?

Did you check the Add with Wildcards button?

Make sure the Include only  if archive attribute is set button is not checked.

Does any of that help?

Hello knocks

The file I'm reffering to is a zip file of my personal data that I use for backup and burn to a DVD. I can re add the same files to the archive and of course they will overide and update. But I would much prefer to just use the freshen function if it will only work. Like I say, there are times that it responds and shows the progress bar and the flying files but when I view the file it has not been updated; and yes I have changed the file. I sometimes wonder if it is a "path" problem: I moved my Documents to my E volume (but that was before I created the zipfile) and maybe when it tries to freshen the file it looks to the c drive; I don't know but its a thought.

I'm trying to replicate your error, but so far I can't.

If it was searching for the files in the wrong drive or folder, it should give you an error msg about unable to find files.

If it finds no changes to freshen, it should give you a msg "nothing to do."

What version of WinZip are you using?

Hi knocks

Verison 9. I don't receive any error messages but I do receive a "nothing to do" message about half the time. However, when it responds (as decribed before) I will test it by going to a file I know has been updated, and therefore should be recognized by the system that file has changed and update it, but no update takes place. Everything else works great with no indication of a corrupted file.

What's the file attribute on the files you are trying to freshen?

Hi knocks

Off hand I would say that they are: read and write (I'm the administrator), not hidden and it is password protected.

I'm sorry hardwire; I didn't mean to leave you hanging.  I had a problem with some really nasty adware that slipped past my firewall, antivirus, and antispyware programs.  It took me days to get the last of it removed from my system, and I'm still waiting for the Tom Coyote forums to confirm that I got it all.

I've duplicated your problem.  It happens only while refreshing encrypted files.  It might be by design, and I can't find a solution.

If you haven't solved it on your own, I'd suggest you go to the WinZip site at http://www.winzip.com/xtech.htm and ask them your question.

Let us know their answer.  I'd be interested to hear.
