Window Vista SP2 only boots in Safe Mode - 540s
I have a Dell 540s, which has behaved itself for the past couple of years, however!
I 'think' due to a recent microsoft update I can only use the desktop in Safe Mode (normal mode the screen freezes after bringing up my desktop).
I have update the BIOS from 1.0.9 to 1.1.3, and have booted with boot logging on and get the following info in ntbtlog.txt ...
Loaded driver \SystemRoot\system32\ntkrnlpa.exe
Loaded driver \SystemRoot\system32\hal.dll
...
Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\NDProxy.SYS
...
Did not load driver \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\kbdhid.sys
and the last driver to log as loading .....
Loaded driver \SystemRoot\System32\drivers\tcpipreg.sys
Tried several windows vista sites, but tp no avail.
Also, tried upgrading to Windows 7, but this also seems not to work? :emotion-9:
Many thanks in advance.

Did you do a System Restore to a time before the "update" or before the problem started? If it was an update, rolling back should remove it and revert any changes made.

Hi theflash1932,
Yes, I did a System Restore and was able to login in again, but I think windows kept doing an automatic update and eventually I lost the ability to restore to an early enough time (system restore no longer seems to work, it just hangs when calling it in safe mode)

I went into MSCONFIG and switched off all apps on startup, and all non-windows services and have successfully logged in.
Also System Restore (eventually) now appears, but alas has only one date - the 25/10/2011, which I know the problem started before this time.
I'm a bit cautious that it's not an app/service, because I have managed to login before and after a while (say 1 hour max) the system then freezes again, but at the same time hopefull it is an app .....

Try following my guide below a clean install of Windows 7 to perform the Windows 7 upgrade.

How exactly did you try upgrading to Windows 7? What happened when you tried to install it, did you attempt to install via the BIOs?

Do not "upgrade" instead choose "custom (advanced)".
This should work out much better (refer to Step 6. of my guide and to the link here) for best results.
