Install the standalone Service Pack 1 using the installers here:

Service Pack 1 64 bit English

Service Pack 1 32 bit English

Service Pack 1 Multi-Language

July 24th, 2013 10:00

The download of the link for sp1 for 64 bit failed.  This link was called K8976932-64.exe

This was the message that I got:  Installation was not successful.  Catastrophic failure  Error:  E_UNEXPECTED(0x8000ffff)

After getting this message, MS directed me to 3 possible "fixes" which I started to go through.

First was the System Update Readiness tool for windows 7 for x64 based systems   (KB947821) May 2013.  There was an extension to the KB number used else where and it was -V27-64.msu

I ran this and it failed.  The message was:  Installer encountered an error 0xc8000247  The first digit could have been a zero or an "O", not sure.

I checked to make sure that there was no security (MacAfee) and it hasn't been activated so nothing should be blocking anything trying to download.

meezerpleezer,

Try reading...

Windows Updates fail to install

There is a fix for each operating system. This may correct your problem.

Tried this yesterday and totally failed.  Things are not looking good at all.

Rick, I did this yesterday and it still failed.

Now, here comes a group of dumb questions (as I said, not good with computers).

1.  Forgetting any data on the computer at this point, what would happen if I just went into DOS when I start the computer and loaded my recovery back up disk into the computer?  It was made the day I received the computer in July 2010.

2.  Would all the factory set-ups be in this disk like my actual version of windows 7 plus the additional software that I had ordered?

3. If windows is not on this disk, then how do I get my paid for copy loaded into the computer?  No "key" came with the computer (my office 2010 came with a key).  Do I need to contact MS or Dell?

4.  Assuming that the version of windows is on the recovery disk, then would my external hard drive which supposedly copies the latest version of the software when I back my computer up, be able to take my windows and add SP1 plus anything else that MS sent over the past 3 years?

More info on my situation and number 4:  when the new hard drive was installed, the store that installed it, loaded another disk (not mine) for windows 7 home premium.  I had downloaded from my external hard drive, the last back-up.  Unfortunately (naturally) MS detected an inconsistent product number for windows 7 in my computer and demanded $$ for it.  I took my recovery disk, made by a dell tech and the same one I am referring to in all my questions, and used DOS to load it into the computer to over write what the store had done.  I haven't heard from MS since. However, I seem to be missing the partition necessary in the hard drive to make a image.  I would have thought that if windows was on the recovery disk, this wouldn't have happened.  All the changes and trials that I have done from your suggestions have been made on what was loaded on the computer by the recovery disk.  I have NOT, at this time, tried to down load an updated backups from the hard drive since the recovery disk seems to not have created this partition.  Hence, I am wondering if I should try to load the recovery disk again (question 1) and if that would create this partion for backups in the hard drive.  Sorry to be so dumb but this has created quite a mess for me.  Thank you for your answer and for anyone else who might try and answer.  I am really in a bad way right now and buying a new computer is not an option.

meezerpleezer,

First use Belarc Advisor to get your product keys.

If you return the system back to factory, it should be the same was it was when you first started the system. Backup all files and folders that you cannot afford to lose.

If you follow Philip's advice, he can walk you through doing a clean installation on your system, including activation.
