Windows 7 unable to install updates

Hi - I have a DELL Inspiron 560 with Windows 7 installed. Lately, I haven't been able to install windows security updates. I keep getting the error code  8024200d  and the message: Windows Installer is missing or corrupt. Can someone please help me fix the problem?  Thank you.

If you receive Windows Update error 8024200d, it can mean that an update did not finish downloading or installing. The System Update Readiness Tool for Windows can correct some conditions that cause this error.

To resolve this problem, use the System Update Readiness tool. Then, install the Windows update or service pack again.Download the System Update Readiness tool.
