The cleanest way to upgrade to SE is to format the drive, boot using a start-up disc and install 98SE . . at a point it will ask you to put the original OS disc to qualify for the upgrade.  This will wipe everything on the drive, so be sure to back-up data and have program disc to reinstall.

If you don't have one, you can make a start up disc from any win98 pc .

Hope this helps. . wrs

The XPS-R model lacks anything in the BIOS related to virus protection so that shouldn't be the cause of the problem.

P.S. Before trying to run the upgrade have you CTRL-ALT-DEL and shut down everything running in the background except EXPLORER and the SYSTRAY?  Possibly you have a program running in the background that you are not aware of.  If that doesn't work trying running the upgrade when in Windows Safe Mode.

Hi wrs -

Just to clarify, I'm updating, not upgrading. The 98 to 98 SE update disc just adds the SE files to an existing 98 installation. As the install requires that you have 98 on the system, I can't start clean unless I reinstall 98 first, and I can't update from DOS (disabled by the install).

My understanding from checking out newsgroups is that doing a clean install won't necessarily solve this problem - there's supposedly a hard disk read/write conflict somewhere. I'm still wondering if I have some sort of virus protection running for the BIOS that I can't detect.

If you purchased a retail Windows 98SE disc you can perform a clean install using the original Win98 disc to qualify for the upgrade . . and it will  avoid carrying forward issues with registery and others issues.
