Windows Hardware Abstraction Layer (hal.dll) Problem

My computer systems has been running perfectly fine for several months, until yesterday
it suddenly would not boot and I get the following error message:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\system32\hal.dll
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

When I pause the system during boot initialisation, I get the following message:

Invalid BOOT.INI file
Booting from c:\windows\

I have found several articles on Microsoft's Knowledge Base, which instructs you
to rename original files and then replace them from the Windows XP CD, however this
has not fixed the problem at all.

Can anyone help me in resolving this problem?

TIA,

Mike

Here are a couple of Dell Knowledge Base articles that may help you out.

Thank you so much Majestic!

That has fixed my problem, now I can get into Windows, backup all my important data and perform a fresh install of XP.

I followed to help documents and then typed the following command in the XP Recovery Console:

C:\>bootcfg /rebuild

Your help is greatly appreciated.
