Windows Installer not working - Cannot install Microsoft Updates or run msconfig
Hello,
I have posted a message under Malware removal but I was wondering if it would be more appropriate to post the part about not being able to install Microsoft Updates here. Over the last day or two, I have been unable to install any Microsoft Updates. I recently did a system restore because I was having other issues. I also cannot run msconfig.
This is a Hijackthis log that I ran a few minutes ago.

Kathy,
I would consider doing a repair of XP's Operating system. Since I'm at work, I cannot provide you with information on making a slipstream disk using nLite. If I give the instructions, you'll need to get all your Windows Updates, again.
Insert the Operating System and restart your comnputer.
Press any key to boot from the CD.
Choose install.
Do the agreement.
Now choose repair. Leave the disk in until it prompts you see the Welcome Screen. Takes about 35 minutes.
You'll need to get all your Windows Updates, again, especially the Custom Ones.
Everything should then be there like it's supposed to be.

Quick update....
I went to the microsoft community and found the following link: http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?pg=1&p=1&tid=7f28cb15-01df-42e0-826e-768e9c5dcf3c&dg=microsoft.public.windowsupdate&lang=en&cr=US&sloc=en-us
I followed these instructions and the updates are finally downloading:
1. Click on Start and then click Run,
2. In the open field type "REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL" (without quotation marks) and
press Enter.
3. When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in WUAPI.DLL succeeded" message,
click OK.
4. Please repeat these steps for each of the following commands:
REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL
REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL
REGSVR32 ATL.DLL
REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL
REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL
I still have to wait and see if they'll install properly, so I'll update shortly.

Hi Rick,
Thank you for your reply :) I tried those steps and although some updates are downloaded and installed, some are not. For example, I cannot get the following to work:
Office Live Add-In
Symantec Antivirus Live Update

Kathy,
Sometimes some of the updates do not install until after you restart your computer. Did you also do the custom updates, especially .net framework, needed to run many applications? Did you Download Latest Java?
If the updates do NOT install, post back the KB numbers of the updates and someone here, may be someone else with a quicker response since I work this weekend, will be able to help you get those installed.

Hi Rick,
Thank you for the quick response :emotion-1: Can I follow the repair instructions without making a slipstream disk (I'm not sure what this is actually)?
Will following the repair instructions wipe out programs that I have installed? Or, is it similar to the System Restore function where you don't actually lose personal documents and most programs?

Kathy,
Doing the repair as I described above, will NOT wipe out anything. It will repair XP but you'll get the version on your Operating System disk. So you'll need to get all the Windows Updates, again. If you make a slipstream disk, you can repair and have SP3 and all the updates, drivers, etc, in case of an emergency.
You'll be ok and not lose any files and folders, just Windows Updates and they can be downloaded. If this was done on another brand computer, like HP/Compaq, you lose everything.

Hi Rick,
I no longer have problems with the downloads. I did download an updated version of Java. I ran the "custom" updates on Microsoft's site and everything seems up-to-date.
However, I still can't get msconfig to run, which makes me think that there is still something missing. Also, when I open up the Windows Task Manager, the display is missing the toolbar at the top (it's been like that for a few months). There are also a number of programs showing in the "Add/Remove" list under Control Panel that I can't seem to delete (i.e., there is no option to "remove" when I click on the item) - how can I go about removing these inactive programs that seem to have been deleted everywhere else? Nero is one of them - it also shows up under "Services" but I've uninstalled it.
Thank you :)

Kathy,
GREAT JOB! :emotion-21: Thanks for posting back. Sorry I could give you the information to make a slipstream disk, so you had to download all those Windows Updates, again.
If you want to make one, here's the information.
Download nLite.
Download Wndrvrbckup Backup Utilities so you can include your drivers on the disk. It's really nice because you can include all the Windows Updates so you don't have to go throught all the updates, again. Remember how to repair the system, it comes in handy.
Have a great Holiday! :emotion-5:

Hi Rick,
Thank you very much for your help! Running the Repair from the XP CD solved both the installer and msconfig issues :) And....everything else (i.e., programs, documents, etc) is fine too.
I really appreciate it!
Have a great week :emotion-2:

Your Hijackthis log is posted here and you are already getting assistance. Further, Hijackthis logs should not be posted outside that forum.
Since you are already getting help, please refrain from asking for help from other members or staff while you are being instructed by a member of the HJT Team. Any modifications you make on your own can result in system changes which may not show it the log you already posted. Following advice outside of that post may cause confusion for the team member assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer. The HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean.
