Every time I try and open ..any programme eg. My Computer, OUTLOOK infact pretty much anything the Windows Installer box comes up on screen with 'preparing to install.........' and can stay there for a minute or more until the programme opens, its as if it is trying to install all the time.
Go to the event viewer (Start > Control Panel > Perfomance and Maintenance > Administrative Tools > Event View and page through the three folders there looking for any error or problem involving Windows Installer. Double click on some of these and see if you can determine the program that Windows Installer thinks needs to be installed. Report back what you find.
I think you are right on track - Event Viewer shows dozens of warnings for each attempt made to open Outlook or Internet Explorer etc.. they all refer to Outlook Express and Spamfighter... I do not use either of these any more and Spamfighter will not let me remove programme... I suspect the problem lies there ??

Try reinstalling Spam Fighter, then remove by the the Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs.
