Look here first. Control panel » folder options » file types and look down the list for AVI and see what program is used to open it. If it is WMP, then here is the MS site for codecs for the WMP versions listed:
Ok, I have tried everything that you suggested and it still dont work. I have even tried other computers with all the same win media player 10's, and also one computer that has media player 9, and all do the same thing. 5 out of 5 do not work. So I am sending the cd's back. Thank you so much for your support.
Mary, we have tried DVD players in our home entertainment systmes, the dvd/rw/r in our computer, and also 5 different other computers. It just does not play. The windows media player comes up, but instead of seeing the video, all I see is crazy looking type screen saver on the media player.
Also your link that you provided, clearly states on it that Windows Media Player will play the cd along with other free players on the list.
So thank you for replying, but I am going to send them back. There are of no use like this.
Ok,Thatsme, I am willing to try it. So where do I get the codec that you are referring to? Supposinly I have all the codecs downloading and installed. Do you have a link?
I am sorry that you feel that my problem is stupid, I felt I had a problem, and I know that the decent, nice people on this forum , not like yourself, are willing to help me out. So in my opinion, if there is a stupid problem, then it must come from you, for even responding to my so called "stupid problem" as you referred to it. I suggest that if you have nothing to help someone out with, then do not respond with rude replys. Saying I had a stupid problem to me was rude. I have only been using this forum since my husband bought me my new 8600 laptop about 2 weeks ago now, and up until now everyone has been extremely helpful. Benswa you are the first person that gave me a rude remark, and I hope you are proud of that.
To all of the other very nice helpful members that replied and gave me suggestions to do, I want to thank you all. My problem is now fixed. The makers of the cd that was in question, sent me a file to download to my computer and it worked. Now the windows media player 10 plays the video asscoiated with the program. The name of the file is "tscc.exe" for anyone that may have a similar problem.
Thanks to all again, and wish everyone a Merry Christmas

If that doesn't resolve it, you can do a google for "codec". Also you could try to go back to WMP9 and see if it is related to WMP 10, available here:

You can download the small utility sherlock codec detector. It will tell you what codecs you have and if they are OK:
