Windows Protection Error ... System Halted - HELP!
Windows Me, everything has been working fine except I had to bypass my router/firewall a few days ago as it was drastically slowing down my broadband access. Had just checked email in Outlook Express and tried to open Internet Explorer window when the blue screen of death popper up with the subject message. Have been updating NAV virus definitions and full system scan once a week.
Cannot reboot beyond the screen that allows the choice of normal or safe mode ... normal just recycles and safe mode brings back the blue screen. Have run NDD and Scandisk and they found files with allocation errors - repaired - and a Windows temp file with an allocation error - "disk's usage table allocates too much or too little space for these files" - repaired. Also, invalid directory entry - free space count was fixed.
Only other thing was cannot find IFSHELP.SYS
It appears the hard drive is okay but I cannot get Windows to open up even with my NAV rescue disks or the Me startup CD.
Can I reinstall Me without losing my data files?
Thanks for any suggestions!

Yes, you should be able to do an "dirty" installation of ME, but I suggest you try running system restore first. This can be done by booting from your ME disc and following the instructions here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;279736
That error can have many causes, some of them serious such as a hard drive failure. Running system restore will provide a clue as to what might have happened. If you can get your system back up and running, back up your important stuff and consider reinstalling ME.
