Please don't double-post the same problem. Your question was answered in your other thread.
I have the same issue: an Inspirion 1525 2000-0142 error code. Since the HD is most likely at fault, can I simply bypass it and store the OS on a USB drive? Or do I need to swap out the HD?
Oh, duh.... Vista Home. Well, this is for an older, back-up laptop. I have scads of USB drives all over the place, and didn't really want to dish out $50 - $75 for a used HD if all the start-up could conceivably be crammed onto a USB. Anything I would save would likely be minimal. I was just looking for a economical means to resurrect this beast for use in a pinch if needed. How would one make a bootable USB drive?
Always include the version of Windows in your posts. :emotion-5:
You can probably make a bootable USB hard drive that'll work with this system. But if the internal drive is failing (has failed) are you going to save everything on the external drive? I wouldn't trust the internal drive to save your docs, photos, music etc.
You can run the Windows installer from USB instead of a DVD, but you cannot run the actual Windows software from USB or other 'removable' media (like a 'live CD').
Hi there, similar to the above. My Dell Vostro started to slow down on Thursday, it froze whilst I was working on a large ms word document. I restarted the computer and it appeared to work though quite slowly and I carried on working. I worked again on Friday pm and again it was quite slow but was managable. This morning I tried to log on and it got to the main screen but completely froze so I turned the computer on and started again but windows did not load.
I got the error message Oxc00000e9.
I checked this forumn for additinal help and ran the boot menu and did a diagnostic check.
All of the devices were fine apart from the hard drive.
The following message appeared
Error code 2000-0142Validation 4729 Msg: Hard Drive O-S/N81Q7B43AB
The laptop is about six months old and my warranty runs out in April 2013. Can this be fixed? What would Dell suggest I do in this instance. I am a customer from the UK.
Always include the complete model number and version of Windows in your posts. :emotion-5:
Check owner's manual for instructions to remove and reinstall the hard drive in whatever model Vostro laptop you have. If removing and reinstalling the original drive doesn't eliminate the error, you'll have to contact Dell in the UK for a replacement drive under the warranty.
I have Dell studio xps 1340 , with window 7 32 bit on it. Recently, i had to format my laptop and after reinstalling windows 7(32), i ran dell diagnostic test. All test were passed except for:
Hard drive DSTshort test
giving error code 0142 msg: Error code 2000-0142 hard drive 1 self test unsuccessful status 79
But i am able open windows 7, have not received any problem working with it. But shutting down is a problem, infact it takes forever to shutdown. It does not shutdown. Is there a problem with my hard drive???
Error Code 2000-0142 indicates that the hard drive needs to be replaced on the computer.

I have had occasional problems booting my computer since July. I will turn it on and it will run the recommended boot up for two hours and then finally let me log in. Now my wireless will not connect to any wireless connections. I ran a diagnostic test and it gave me the error 2000-0142 code. I can still get on my computer, so I'm not sure what this code means for my laptop. does it affect my wireless connection? I've noticed it is slow on occasion, but I just need to be able to connect to wifi. Help?

Error code 2000-0142 means the hard drive failed. You probably can't do anything until you replace that drive...
Sorry... :emotion-9:

Seeing as I can't get far enough to try and repair the OS. Do you think it will still work with a replacement HD?
